Non-trad, military veteran. I double majored in neuroscience and math, and I’d love to do an MD/PhD in biostatistics or bioinformatics. I’m applying to mostly schools with an MSTP, even if I get in as MD only the resources will be there to do research. Please help me with my school list, I’ve got my state schools and reaches but I’d like to apply a little more broadly to maximize my chances.
Cumulative GPA: 3.7
Science GPA: 3.6 (May be an underestimate, waiting on AMCAS verification)
I have some Cs and a D from an abortive attempt at online classes about 7 years ago. I was on active duty at the time, one C is because I deployed mid-course. I cleaned up my act and maintained 3.8 GPA for the past four years at my degree granting institution.
MCAT score(s) and breakdown: 518 (128, 129, 130, 131)
State of residence or country of citizenship (if non-US): Arizona, ties to Washington
Ethnicity and/or race: white
Undergraduate institution or category: state school
Clinical experience (volunteer and non-volunteer): 50 hours in ER, caregiver in nursing home (400 hours), caregiver in group home for developmentally disabled (600 hours)
Research experience and productivity: two years in neuroscience lab, one year as a volunteer lab manager, honors thesis in neuroscience and a poster. One year doing a second honors thesis in mathematics. One summer doing research through Amgen Scholars program, poster. One year working full time in a wet lab during gap year, this will be 2 years by matriculation.
I have yet to get my name on a paper, although I’m hopeful I’ll be able to submit something in the next year.
Shadowing experience and specialties represented: flight med (25 hours), infectious disease (57 hours), internal medicine (7 hours)
Non-clinical volunteering: math tutor at after school program for under-privileged kids (120 hours), coding program for girls - will start leadership position in the fall (227 hours)
Other extracurricular activities (including athletics, military service, gap year activities, leadership, teaching, etc): 6 years active duty military prior to undergrad and national guard while in undergrad. Employed full time in a wet lab for gap year and continued non-clinical volunteering. Volunteer lab manager for a year in neuroscience lab. Assistant to the TA in biology lab.
