Hey Guys,

I am a Middle Eastern applicant (probably ORM) from CA (LA with family in Bakersfield for UCR). I attended a private university in PA and believe I have a very meaningful application, with a strong emphasis on being first-gen and promoting diversity.

Stats:

GPA: 3.97

MCAT: 504

Experience:

Clinical Volunteering: 500 hours at a war zone hospital in the Middle East

Clinical Paid: 600 hours as a caregiver for a leukemia patient, a very meaningful activity

Non-Clinical Volunteering: 300 hours at church, 300 hours mentoring disadvantaged students

Research: 600 hours with a publication

Hobbies: Finance society, fragrance shopping and selling

TA: 300 hours in Organic Chemistry and Biochem

Residential Advisor: 3 years in college, with a focus on diversity and inclusion

My letters of recommendation should be very strong, and I believe my writing was also pretty good.

Any suggestions would help tremendously!

Have you graduated? What was your major? What are your science/BCPM GPA's?

Do you have any clinical exposure in the United States? Specifically what is your health care and patient facing experience in the US?

What is the nature of your church-based non-clinical volunteering? Break down your hours.

I am an incoming Senior Neuroscience major, sGPA is 3.95. Yeah the clinical paid job was in the US for 600 hours, also have additional 500 in hospice work in the US that I forgot to mention in my post. For the church, I was teaching kids of my ethnicity how to read and write in our own language, hosting picnics, analyzing our culture.

UNLV admits very few non residents with a MCAT of 504. You are competitive for most DO schools and I suggest these:
WESTERN
TUCOM-CA
CHSU-COM
AZCOM
TUNCOM
UIWSOM
KCU-COM
ATSU-KCOM
DMU-COM
ACOM
CUSOM
MU-COM
WVSOM
PCOM (all schools)
LECOM (all schools)
NYITCOM
Touro-NY
For MD schools I suggest these:
UC Davis
UC Riverside (if you are from that region)
Loma Linda (only if you fit their mission)
California University
Belmont
TCU
Rosalind Franklin
Medical College Wisconsin
Oakland Beaumont
Wayne State
Eastern Virginia
Drexel
Vermont
Albany
Alice Walton (when it opens)
Roseman (when it opens)

Quick question, I am not from Inland Empire - I am from LA, but I have family living in Bakersfield and palms spring which is part of the inland empire, does this count as ties for UCR?
Also would you suggest any other CA md schools?

It may be a tie. A 504 MCAT is not realistic for any other CA schools.

You need more community service orientation activities: food distribution, shelter volunteer, job and tax preparation, transportation services, or housing rehabilitation, mainly. This needs to have 150 hours to avoid getting screened out.

If you are Muslim, check out the AMMSA and their school chapters.

What would you say about Penn state, George Washington, Temple and UCLA
Your MCAT of 504 is at or below the 10th percentile for those schools and they receive a large number of applications every year. I do not see any other MD schools that you would have a realistic chance for.

Connect with the admissions team at UCR. I agree your 504 will not make your application competitive, but get advice from their team to know how you can improve your position. They might even have suggestions/resources to help you with MCAT prep.

I appreciate your thorough responses, and one last question regarding
Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science College of Medicine - I see their MCAT is 501? But it is an MD school? Would this be something I should consider? I saw that they have a join program with UCLA

Charles R Drew is now a separate MD school and no longer linked with UCLA. Read their website to see if you fit the target class which is mostly but not all Black students.

Thank you so much for bringing up AMMSA. I never heard about this.
