I have a question regarding chances at MD school (asking for a friend). I need some general advice if you could chime in when you get a chance. So far this past cycle (2017-18) he has had 1 interview at a DO school (TouroNY) with a 499 MCAT. However, he did a re-take and scored a 512! (just found out today). I told him I'd run it by some of you guys, but wondering if he can apply MD this upcoming cycle because his GPA is only a 3.4 yet at a very good undergrad (WashU). He also did some post-bacc work at a smaller college close to home and took several upper level science courses and got straight As in them. Is he limited to DO with that GPA? Kind of a tough call. Would also be interested in a brief school list if @Goro and @Faha could chime in. Here are his stats etc:

24 yo male NJ resident
Pre-med: WashU
cGPA: 3.4
sGPA: 3.25 (with upper level sciences)
Post-bacc course GPA: 4.0 (didnt do an entire post-bacc program just took another semesters worth of upper level sciences to raise sGPA)
512 MCAT
~150 hours research, no publications
~1000 hours clinical experience/exposure shadowing OB, general surgery, IM
~100 hours non-clinical volunteering (he said roughly hasn't calculated exact)
Father is an MD, radiologist-not sure that makes a difference but figured I'd add it

I suggest these MD schools:
The 3 NJ state public schools
Seton Hall
Vermont
Quinnipiac
Albany
New York Medical College
Penn State
Drexel
Temple
George Washington
NOVA MD
Oakland Beaumont
Medical College Wisconsin
Loyola
Rosalind Franklin
Creighton
Also apply to to at least 8 DO schools

His dad being a radiologist means nothing.
Low GPAs are lethal for MD, but IF he has a rising GPA trend, that's different. He should apply to the NJ MD schools. I'm really surprised he got an interview at Touro-NY with a 499 MCAT. Were they desperate?

Haha i dont know how he did either with the 499 since they have a fairly strict 500 MCAT cutoff. Do you think he should take some more upper level sciences and get As in them this summer to boost the sGPA and then update the schools when completed by September during the cycle? or wont make much of a difference since sGPA is still only 3.25. It may only get him to a 3.3 at best depending on how many courses. He has strong upward trend and undergrad was upper tier (not Ivy, but WashU in STL is up there from what I know). On a side note his parents are pushing him to go to SGU in carrib just to start sooner because they are telling him hes getting too old lmao (kid is 24) I told him that is literally the most bizarre, immature/unintelligent and rash life decision he could possibly make especially with a 512 MCAT and the hard work hes put in.

Rising trends and reinvention are always good.

Get his parents accounts on SDN so we can teach them the errors of thier ways, before they entirely destroy his medical career!
