  1. cGPA and sGPA as calculated by AMCAS: 3.95 / 3.97
  2. MCAT score(s) and breakdown: 521 (128/129/132/132) only attempt
  3. State of residence: Michigan (rural)
  4. Ethnicity and/or race: White
  5. Undergraduate institution: University of Michigan, Ann Arbor
  6. Clinical experience: 2000 hours as PCT
  7. Research experience and productivity: 460 hours in biochem lab, 8th author pub. 150 hours in surgical education lab, 3rd author poster and manuscript in-progress.
  8. Shadowing experience and specialties represented: 30 hours. CCM, oncology, genetics
  9. Non-clinical volunteering: 100 hours at homeless shelter, 65 hours at various places with pre-health club, 30 tutoring/mentoring underserved youth
  10. Other extracurricular activities: Pre-health academic honor society (3 years), biology TA (1 year), RA ( 2.5 years), Pre-health living/learning community (1 year, official university program). Gap year spent working full time at UMich hospital as PCT while also doing surgical education research part time with UMich Med School faculty
  11. Relevant honors or awards: N/A other than awards for gpa
  12. Anything else not listed you think might be important: Reapplicant, applied extremely late last year due to family pressures (secondaries in September/October). From a rural area, personal statement is focused on wanting to be a rural PCP.
I know my applications last year were dead on arrival because of how late I applied. Didn't want to apply at all, but was basically forced by family ("you're ruining your life, you won't hear from me if you don't apply"). So unfortunately I'm a re-applicant. I have strong LOR from both PIs, a physician I worked with, clinical supervisor at work, and the biology professor I TA'd for. I have a few others I'm unsure of strength. I'm most worried about my low volunteering hours. Looking to update school list, would like to minimize schools I reapply to. Thanks in advance!

Previously applied to: Michigan, Michigan State, Oakland, Central Mich, Western Mich, Wayne State, BostonU, Case Western, Dartmouth, Mount Sinai, Northwestern, USF Morsani, UChicago, Cincinnati, Iowa, Miami, Virginia

How late?

You got no IIs?

Yes, your hours are a little low. You should have 150 hours of service orientation activities to avoid getting screened out, and I only see 100 hours with homeless shelter.

No IIs. I completed most of my secondaries in October. I have 100 volunteering hours at the shelter and then with my pre-health honor society (AED) we had volunteering events each month with local organizations such as cooking at the Ronald McDonald House, stewardship days at local parks, and planning events for our Special Olympians.

You should accumulate another 50+ hours at the homeless shelter before you reapply. Also, another 20 hours of physician shadowing would be helpful. I suggest these schools with your stats:
U Michigan
Michigan State
Wayne State
Central Michigan
Western Michigan
Oakland Beaumont
Washington University (in St. Louis-almost a guaranteed interview with your stats)
Colorado
Arizona (Phoenix)
Northwestern
Iowa
Vanderbilt
TCU
Miami
USF Morsani
Duke
U Virginia
Pittsburgh
Jefferson
U Penn
Cincinnati
Ohio State
Hofstra
Einstein (free tuition)
Mount Sinai
NYU (free tuition)
New York Medical College
Rochester
Vermont
Tufts
UMass
Apply in June and submit all your secondaries by July.

Schedule visits or admissions event attendance at MSU, CMU or WMU.

Since MSUCHM requires an SJT, what were your SJT results? When will you take Casper, or is your PREview high enough? (Maybe it's in MSAR, but there's no report on their website about when your PREview score expires for them.)

How much do you keep up with MSUCHM?

Sounds like your timeline and your communication of purpose/mission fit misfired. It's hard to think you would be overlooked as a rural candidate with your metrics, especially given the minimum 3 in-state programs I pointed out here. Be honest with significant improvements in your application, but leave out your family pressure. You were in an LLC for premeds; you are around people who know this process and can mentor you... so I'm surprised you still threw out a late application.

Did you look into NHSC or HPSP? Did you have any experience with AHECs and FQHCs?
