Hi everyone, I am not able to respond to the other thread. But, I’d like to apologize for being a douche about the vaccine. I guess I was just trying to impart that there is a good chunk of the population that belittling will make them less likely to get the vaccine. I could have worded it better, and “begrudgingly” as it was put, I will get the shot. My mother recently had a breakthrough case and it probably was my fault. She’s doing fine now, but went to the ER at some point due to symptoms. It was a big eye opener. I am expecting a lot of hate in this thread because of the Mom part, but my apologies for waiting until something like this happened. I am now trying to convince my social circle into the vax so I can feel at least a little altruistic.

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. Some opinions may be against the socially or medically correct view. But at the end of the day, a core tenet of medical ethics is autonomy. I think covid has brought out the worst in people on both sides. We all need to respect everyone, regardless of their opinion.

With that said...

Welcome to the correct side!!!!!!

I just wish it didn't require someone being personally impacted by the virus to acknowledge that the global pandemic killing hundreds of thousands of your fellow Americans should be taken very seriously.

Yeah no kidding. Twitter and social media platforms rife with these sorts of things. Deny deny deny until it personally impacts them, and then all of a sudden they have their "oh **** this is real" moment. The lucky ones live. The unlucky ones end up on reddits Herman Cain Awards.

I've been seeing this kind of crap on the nytimes for years now

People screaming about how covid is fake and all sorts of junk until half their family is in the hospital

Then all of a sudden it's all I need ivermectin and plasma antibodies and blah blah blah

Respect to the antivaxers who stay committed even after they lose their spouse or parent

Hell no. I have sympathy for the less educated. But for those who are educated and choose non vaccination or are advocating non vaccination- most of them are doing so because they are blinded by their politics and negative emotions.

Fückem.

I told my med students/residents, what separates the physicians to midlevel/nurses is the fact that we all have to learn to take “full” responsibility when **** hits the fan. It’s not “their” fault, it’s is “our” fault. Hope your mom has a speedy recovery.

I wouldn’t use the word altruistic to make myself feel better. More like doing the right thing, be respectful/responsible for people around you, especially your loved ones.

I was just at a closed room with some very smart people, but not in the medical field. Walked in with my mask on, everyone looked around and said
“oh, don’t worry, we all are vaccinated….”

“I am doing this to protect you, not me….” Knowing that I was vaccinated almost 10 months ago and just intubated a patient without proper protection. (Ran in to help, without putting my N95). I would be absolutely horrified if I indeed get anyone sick, due to my own stupidity.

I’ve heard this countless times. I reply “seatbelts plus airbags”.

We still hold our department meetings by zoom even though we are all vaxxed and masked.

But even around the bullpen, you see surgeons and some of our partners having their masks down all the time….. some partners still wear n95 all the time, some will not wear it. At least all of us are vaccinated.

All I’m trying to say is that being a prick will not make people go do what you want (a.k.a. get vaccinated). In fact it may even make people less likely. I understand I was probably/was misinformed and it was selfish to wait for something to hit close to home but I’m talking about the future and if you guys want mid 20s early 30s to get vaccinated (if they are not already) then I would recommend a change in tone, but that’s only a recommendation I’m not telling any doctor what to do. And by the way, I said in the last thread, there’s no way I would ever think that I am smarter than a doctor and I was not trying to say that I was, I just truly thought that I could read studies correctly and come to my own conclusion. But I guess not. I’m open to that. People consider you guys to be smarter than most people, but even if that’s the case there’s no need to be a prick. There is a good portion of the unvaccinated population that is well educated that came to a different conclusion than you guys, just saying. I’m not still defending anything, but I fully expect this comment to get torn to shreds as well even though I have no idea how considering I’m pretty much sucking your guys’ <deleted by mod> and will get vaccinated.

For me, considering my industry, most people think I’m a dick and frankly it’s probably true. I’m not trying to misrepresent anything here with any of my comments, I will gladly say I’m the stupid prick i banker that was an idiot about vaccination, but I will also call out the doctor who is top of his class and thinks he knows everything because maybe he does know everything, except he doesn’t know jack about treating people with decency. Is this passive aggressive against vector2? Damn straight, because everybody here knows I’m right!

Gonna be honest Mike, at this point people have little patience left for those who remain skeptical of the vaccine. It has been over a year and a half since this pandemic has started. The vaccine has been publicly available for quite some time. The experts in public health and science have repeatedly explained the research and how the vaccine is the safest and most effective way to protect yourself from COVID, yet people STILL refuse to take the pandemic seriously until they personally witness the horrors of COVID. You said you thought you could read studies yourself and come to a better conclusion than the people at the CDC? Really?

Being nice to people who aren't vaccinated by their own choice is too much to ask of physicians, especially those at the front lines in overcrowded hospitals. Kudos to anyone who still tries to politely convince the unvaxxed to change their mind. I know I have long since given up.

At this point it has nothing to do with tone or information--people have made their vaccination status a part of their identity by now because the right decided to seize it as a way to grandstand against 'government control.' It is almost a sign of your bona fide far right membership to not be vaccinated at this point. This combined with a powerful propaganda machine masquerading as the only 'true' source of news to a group of uneducated people primed to accept disinformation by right wing online echo chambers who have no capacity to understand the science behind the vaccine or read clinical studies so they rely on the propaganda machine for a comprehensible distillate is what has led to this.

At some point I think many of us saw this as some kind of social evolution where the alt right extreme would be selected against since they all decided to collectively not get vaccinated then got sick. But instead of dying quietly at home with their convictions they showed up to the hospital and took large swaths of the healthcare system down with them, sucked up astronomical crippling amounts of resources, their families threatened and fought the frontline workers over ivermectin/hydroxychloroquine/other nonsense time wasting bull****, and in the end most of them will still get to crawl back to the voter booth alive in a year to vote all these ****ing idiots that led to this back in to office. It truly is the fall of Rome in modern times.

Every girl I know under 20 thinks the vax will make her infertile. If that isn’t misinformed, I don’t know what is. Couple that with some douche yelling that she’s stupid for not doing it, well don’t be surprised when she doesn’t do it.

My daughter is 23. She and all her friends are vaxxed. So not all millenial women think COVID vaccination causes infertility. There is apparently some sampling bias.

And this thread is not clearing anything up.

Maybe if they were so good at doing their research they would had read anything on the first page of google when asking that exact questions and realized that is total bull****. Now if they dont trust any medical sources that dont confirm that opinion that isnt an information problem now is it?

My kindergartner, when throwing a tantrum, will act that way and not do something just because I told him to do it. I expect that because he is a child. If an adult is acting that way then that is on them.

Sounds like the only thing you wanted to clear up is how douchey you think we are

But you don't see me hanging out on ibankerzrus forums telling them they are douches for not investing in total market funds
Exactly. The OP can now go find some other board to troll.

How many girls under 20 do you know? And why...? Aren't you a bit older? Sounds creepy talking about their fertility.

And sucks your mom got covid, from YOUR antivaxx mentality. The problem with this country and world is that it's not your problem until it is. We all live in silos now apparently, F the other people in the world long as I get mine mentality.

Are all the girls you know in some kind of anti-intellectual cult or something??? Do they live under a rock with no internet access to google "COVID vaccine infertility"????
And once again, how is the problem medical professionals being dicks when people completely ignore what the experts say and instead believe the story their friend told them about how their aunt's coworker's brother-in-law's ex-wife became infertile after the vaccine (even though she's 47 and probably just hit menopause).

Well she is stupid though.

How many medical societies need to come out to counter act all of the BS surrounding medical myths?

Even with that, people still cling to their feelings about the vaccine. It's ridiculous.

We just need to come to terms that a significant portion of the population is dumb. This is fine. They don't need to be smart. They should just listen to smart people and be shamed when they don't.

When I was an intern, I was dumb. Lo and behold, I listened to smart attendings and read books written by people smarter than me and actually learned something.

2 things, first of all, good for you for being able to change your mind, and publicly (sort of) admit it. That takes something, so props to you.

Secondly, when you complain that being treated vituperatively on an anonymous forum will not help win your heart and mind, keep in mind that this is just that, an anonymous forum for physicians who treat sick people in the midst of a surge in cases that has resulted in resource depletion and stressful working conditions, and really nobody gives AF about trying to gently convince you of the obvious facts. I don’t, anyway.

You might have got your feelings hurt, that happens. If you pursue medicine, that will probably happen again.

In fact, if you do end up practicing medicine, it’s almost a guarantee that you will become frustrated, perhaps with the family member of a patient who spews anti-vaccine nonsense at you after you have spent great effort resuscitating their loved one. At that point, you’ll just have to put on a poker face, gently inform them of the facts, and wearily move on with your day. Again, and again and again.

You might just become appreciative of a forum where you can freely speak your mind.

I echo the above. @bjjmike69, you were doing well with your Mea Culpa, but then continue to complain about some comments. If you are easily offended,, this particular forum represents dangerous waters to be swimming in. There are many passionate and incredibly articulate members you might encounter. Said best by one of my trainers.."When swimming with sharks.....DONT BLEED!" I wish you and your family well.
