It does work, if you explain it correctly. For example, if you say that you want to help people and feel that you would be able to help them the most in the field of medicine because of your deep interest in the subject, then it makes sense. Sure, you could help someone by cooking them a meal or by being a police officer, but if your heart's not in it, you're probably not helping them as much as the guy who has dreamed of going into that field for his entire life.
There are plenty of jobs that don't do anything for anyone (including my last job) and more than a few jobs that are actively predatory. Also the jobs that do tend to do real, positive things for people tend to pay poorly. If you want a decent income and a career that helps others medicine is one of very few options.Because all jobs help people in one way or another![]()

Serving someone fries and placing a cabg are two separate levels of helping
