Interested in Pediatrics. I just don't know which schools to apply too? I was on the MSAR yesterday and most schools were extremely competitive.

The Texas state public schools accept few non residents. You could try Baylor and TCU-UNT. The schools I listed are schools where a URM black/African American applicant with your stats could receive interviews. Definitely include your Pennsylvania schools.

My MCAT was <508, making almost all school extremely competitive for me (got into an MD school recently + 3 MD II). For the MSAR, you want to look at the 10th percentile score of school you are interested in, if your MCAT falls within the 10th of accepted students (the average is the 50th percentile), then you have a good chances of an II (interview invite). Also look at the mission statement for each school, they tend to pick students who have done EC that fit their mission statement. For example Loyola is community service orientated. So people who apply there have huge hrs of community service. I do not have any bias towards DO school as their match list is impressive as well as MD. Therefore I would encourage you to research DO schools as well.

Texas schools don't consider "connections", just official residency status. You would be considered Out of State in Texas.
But hey, even OOS tuition in Texas is less than almost any other med school.
Except for TCU/UNTHSC and UIWSOM , the TX schools take a maximum of 10% OOS.

lt has nothing to do with race and more so with stats (MCAT GPA) The 10th percentile is more like a cutoff mark for the people who were accepted at a school (if we are purely looking at stats). For example If a school's 10th percentile is 510 and the average is 515, and the school’s mission statement aligns with you, then you should apply as your MCAT score is within the 10th percentile even if it is lower the the average. This is an important gaging tool for those who have to pay for secondary applications.

Please stop that thinking that URM have extra cushion space. Med school applications reviews are holistic. If an individual is lacking in the MCAT department, they usually make it up a good LOR, experiences and EC. Don't go in there thinking because you identify as URM, that the process will be a bit easily, because the most important stat in medical school (Board Exams) don't factor in race/ethnicity.

Ok makes sense. I really wasnt thinking that way, I was just confused because I was thinking, "if I'm in the 10th percentile, isnt that really bad because that means the other 90% did way better than me". That was the way I was thinking about it and I honestly am not betting on the fact that I am a URM. I know I worked hard and did the best that I could in undergrad, so we'll see what happens from here.
