Warm Weather Medical Schools

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
not gonna lie, part of the reason I've been studying so hard for my mcat lately is because I associate the cold northeast with Siberia. I think at this point even if I got accepted to Columbia or Cornell I would reject them in a heart beat.

Is it just me or does it seem to be harder gaining admission to warm weather schools than average or cold weather schools?

Yep, I love that warm weather in Boston, New York, Philly, Baltimore, New Haven and Chicago, as well as the other midwestern cities with great med schools (Cleveland, Pitt). Oh and don't forget that tropical paradise of Rochester, MN.

What are you talking about?

I am 60% sure I am gonna be in LA next year 😍 Ahh 70-80 degree weather year round. Maybe then I won't get depressed because of gray winters.

by warm, do you mean mild winters, or HOT summers?

it's been pretty damn cold here in San Diego.... there were times when i would drive to the hospital and it would be 36 degrees out. then again my sister goes to Michigan so im kinda glad im not dealing with that thing called "snow"

It was negative a few days ago here. You people in CA complaining about 40 degree lows can go eff yourselves. 😀

40 degree low! Now that's cold. I have no idea how it is 36 in San Diego.
Shorts, tshirt, and flip flops all last week here 😎

well Baltimore in the Summer would make you crave coastal Florida... I swear it's usually cooler down by my grandparents in Tampa than it is up in here in July.

I like that I get to live in a place on the beach during my clinical years.

I'm serious. I literally will have a place on the water.

It gets chilly where I am, but not like up north where I'd get nailed with 5 degree highs for a few weeks. Just cold enough that I wear close toed shoes and a jacket.

I mean I was driving to the hospital at 330 AM... so that might explain why. Yea November and December were unusually cold. It's been pretty nice in January and February so far, day time highs in the 60s and 70s

If your coming to LA and expecting 70 to 80 year round I think you need to do some research. Maybe in Malibu but not in the valley or downtown, more like 50 in the winters to 120's in the summer. Not gonna lie having 75 degrees from december until now (and prob until may) isn't too bad 🙂

What, I'm not allowed to exaggerate? 😛 Anyway, tell me what this graph means then.. To me it means that the average high in the coldest month is 68, and the average high in the warmest month is 85. I definitely understand that isn't a guarantee for weather, but that kind of weather is still much more preferable to me. I get affected by winter weather really easily, and when it's gray outside and temperatures are bottoming out at -10 sometimes, it's just bad. There is no such thing as perfect weather, but 50 degrees is definitely not cold. That's shorts-and-no-jacket weather here!!

I think acceptance rates to Caribbean schools may refute your theory.

I hear the beaches are nice?

dude evergrey it was 113 in october in downtown LA this year. i am not kidding. they had to evacuate freshman who live in dorms without AC. lol.

and they make it seem like its all good weather, fun and games.

Im in Houston, and although the summers are hot and humid, we really dont have too many 100F+ days, the heat index might say otherwise though. We have about a month of perfect weather in spring and another month of perfect weather in fall. Whatever....my sweet spot for working out seems to be about 92 anyways.

True. Summers can be miserable. But, I still don't think you would call Baltimore a "warm weather city."

It's really not that cold. If you wear a scarf, hat, and gloves, winter is such a pleasant season.

I went to school in Florida and the winters there were much "colder" because nobody was ever dressed properly. So when it was routinely in the 40's it seemed like the end of the world.

Winter in New York is a wonderful season. People who complain about the cold are those who don't wear hats. I don't understand what drives so many people to step outside in 20 degree weather without a hat. Especially these bald men with shiny red heads.

Yeah when I interviewed at USC it was like 98 degrees, early November. Crazy. I am a hot weather guy though, I love temperatures above the 90s. 113 is a little too hot though haha. That's heat stroke weather 🙁

Define "warm weather".

It's 38 degrees Fahrenheit in Buffalo NY right now, and it hasn't been this warm in months. After weeks of below zero temps, I'll gladly take it. The snow banks are half the height they were two days ago.🙂

well an above poster listed Bmore as a "cold weather" city, which is debatable as well

/real cold weather cities don't shut down when they get snow

Warm Weather = You can step out of your place in the dead of winter wearing nothing but shorts, a tee, and sandals, and feel comfortable.

Agreed lol. But the weather can be a bit moody. Woke up this morning to 36 degrees and it was in the low 70s by the afternoon... Talk about dressing issues.
