While the program has its positive attributes (location & level 1 trauma), I wanted to warn potential interviewees about a potentially malignant interview they may have.

I really hope they have changed, but the PD there, Dr. K....has been known to belittle, humiliate, and marginalize the achievements of applicants. The resident's don't warn you about it, because apparently if you're able to talk your way out of one of his mind game methodologies he has another ready to go. After the interview the resident guiding me around told me this was the case, and that it had happened to him also...that it happens to everyone.

You will be asked irrelevant, inane questions about lab values and the units with which they are measured. Word games and mind games will ensue, along with some other unpleasant questions.

I have to say that I was this close to just getting up and just walking out...but decided to politely just stick it through. While some say he is an amazing teacher in the OR, he certainly did not show that quality while attempting to "recruit quality residents". In fact, he actually blamed ungrateful/complaining residents for the program's recent accreditation issues/probation status.

The impression I got from residents there was that they were just thankful to be in anesthesia, or that it was a second chance for some and they had better not rock any proverbial boats. The chair is a big name pain guy, actually a stark contrast to the PD and a pleasure to speak with, but due to some drama with the institution he was formerly at...pretty much makes the residents from IL Masonic radioactive to that institution and possibly other area programs in terms of pain fellowships (hear say).

In a nutshell: Plenty of other solid programs to choose from in the region vs. looking elsewhere. Disrespecting applicants/blaming your own residents is a big red flag in my book.

thanks for the heads up. i was already on the fence about attending the interview due to the cost and a few rumors I'd heard. Also, looking at the current residents, looks like about half are from Iran, which seems a bit odd to me.

That's like when an unattractive girl is super bitchy. I mean, if you're hot, go ahead, be a pain in the arse, and if you're Harvard, sure, be a jerk in an interview; you're Harvard! But man, if you're ugly, you'd better be REALLY nice.

Lol reminds me of the Daniel Tosh bit: "being an unattractive woman is a lot like being a man....... You're gonna have to work"

Aha, I knew I am a woman deep inside. Just an unattractive one.

Well anyone with any intelligence allready knows who you are talking about, I knew candido at that "other" institution. He is a stand up guy as well as "that institution" he was a director at is a rock solid place as well. Don't know he PD, anyone who is applying should form there own opinions.

It goes without saying that intelligent people should/would form their own opinions. But, the whole point of this post and others like it is to give people a heads up so they don't either 1) waste their time and/or 2) know what they're heading into, and in this case realize that they're not alone.

Haha, I agree Candido is a good guy. I said that in other words in my first post, and I never knocked the place he came from. Just telling it like it is and trying not to name names, as that seems to be an unspoken rule on this site.

Mmm- looks like a very unconventional method of interviewing- if your put off by it, then let that be. But that doesn't mean the program is to be avoided. You did mention the PD was an excellent teacher and the Chair is great- no place is perfect- I would still check out the place.

In my personal experience, there is always that one resident who is a "problem resident" - lazy, complaining, untrustworthy etc. The job of a program director is not an enviable one and requires a lot of patience and commitment.

I would just take these comments with a pinch of salt and personally check out the program.

Of course, this is a competitive field. Never throw away an interview, just be prepared that you may get pimped hard and your accomplishments unfairly downplayed.

I know this is an old post...but I happened across it and I'd like to say that the OP was mostly correct. The chairman tries to cover up for the behavior of the PD to get better residents, which they will just mistreat once they are working here. He's all talk
