While the program has its positive attributes (location & level 1 trauma), I wanted to warn potential interviewees about a potentially malignant interview they may have.
I really hope they have changed, but the PD there, Dr. K....has been known to belittle, humiliate, and marginalize the achievements of applicants. The resident's don't warn you about it, because apparently if you're able to talk your way out of one of his mind game methodologies he has another ready to go. After the interview the resident guiding me around told me this was the case, and that it had happened to him also...that it happens to everyone.
You will be asked irrelevant, inane questions about lab values and the units with which they are measured. Word games and mind games will ensue, along with some other unpleasant questions.
I have to say that I was this close to just getting up and just walking out...but decided to politely just stick it through. While some say he is an amazing teacher in the OR, he certainly did not show that quality while attempting to "recruit quality residents". In fact, he actually blamed ungrateful/complaining residents for the program's recent accreditation issues/probation status.
The impression I got from residents there was that they were just thankful to be in anesthesia, or that it was a second chance for some and they had better not rock any proverbial boats. The chair is a big name pain guy, actually a stark contrast to the PD and a pleasure to speak with, but due to some drama with the institution he was formerly at...pretty much makes the residents from IL Masonic radioactive to that institution and possibly other area programs in terms of pain fellowships (hear say).
In a nutshell: Plenty of other solid programs to choose from in the region vs. looking elsewhere. Disrespecting applicants/blaming your own residents is a big red flag in my book.
