So as of May 1st of this application cycle, dental schools will be sharing lists with each other of students holding spots in the 2006 entering class, and students holding positions at multiple schools will be dropped!

Gale Shea at Minnesota warned us of this at our interview last fall, but it wasn't set in stone yet...

But I spoke to Ana Garay-Kong at UCSF admissions and she informed me schools would be sharing lists starting on the 1st of May- and students would be dropped accordingly.

Medical schools have been doing this for years- and dental schools are catching on after having to call alternates the day after school starts because someone failed to send a quick e-mail about the fact that they decided on another school.

dont know if i believe this or not but I WOULD LOVE TO! I know that if i were to get called by my first choice i would drop another school. i would keep (and am currently keeping) only one school at a time. for all of you "i still cant decide" people: you have had years to think about this and really have had months and weeks and alot of knowledge from this site to help you in your decision.

help out people that havent heard from schools and people that are waiting on your spot that you arent going to use. you are entitled to your opinion but i think its getting late enough to where (as already mentioned) people have to start renting/buying places to live and moving far far away from home. save these people the trouble and decide on one school.

good luck to all and im sure some people are really going to be mad at me for this post. oh well. 😀

who should be mad?

Seriously- I withdrew from every school I applied to once I got into a school I knew I would choose over that school.

No reason for me to sit around to see if Temple or ASDOH would accept me when I knew I would pick USC over them.

The only schools that I didn't withdraw from were schools that a) hadn't gotten back to me, and b) that I would rather go to over USC.

I like to think that as a result someone is able to attend an interview/get accepted 2 or 3 months earlier than they would have otherwise. Why cause hassle and stress just to see if a school accepts me.

This is interesting news. As of now, I'm also holding on to only one acceptance, I don't intend to hold spots at two places concurrently. I will hold on to that one until I hear from some place else. To me it doesn't make any sense to hold multiple spots at the same time. I'd rather make the decision as to which one school I'd hold a spot, why waste my money, when eventually I'll have to make that decision anyway.

I totally agree - it would be considerate to withdraw if you know for sure that you're not going to go to a school. I just lost $500 to USC...

Actually I heard about this too at my UCSF interview so I definitely would dcide before May and make sure you don't have multiple deposits for acceptance at schools.

Finally!!! Thank you for posting this thread! It is so nice to know that this process might actually become more effective. It's about damn time!!!

Suzy is an artist - she paints quite a lot.
An artist she may be, but a genius she is not.
She says she wants to be a sociologist,
But she better first get checked by a neurologist.

EXCELLENT!

I can also confirm this. At my UCSF interview, Mr. MaKenzsie (sp?) told me that this year they want 100% dedication and comitment to their school by early May. Im not sure if they will ask for a huge lump sum of $ or drop you if you have more then one acceptance your holding. They said they will be strict about it and honestly I don't blame them at all. Hundreds of people are dying to go to UCSF and if some one is holding two(or more) spots all the way into May, then that says they really don't want to go to UCSF all that bad.

Drop them and give one of these SDN'ers a shot at the cool table!

PDizzle has spoken......

thanks for the heads up. i'll be deciding soon enough 🙂

hahahaha- right??

I actually saw them perform the song in an encore 5 or 6 years ago...
I completely love phish- and teeth of course.

on a side note- it is nice to hear that everyone basically agrees that hold spots is not beneficial.

I'm glad i'm not guilty of such a horrendous deed. 🙂

i'm only holding one ticket too 🙄

I also heard this at my UNLV interview.

WAIT!! How do they decide which school(s) you are dropped from? Are you dropped from all schools! Is this how they do it in Med school?

i cant imagine that they drop you without notice of the policy. i bet that not all schools are implimenting this policy either.

I haven't heard of this in regards to dental schools. I'll check with the admissions office here at Penn to see if I can get some more details.

That's illegal. Unless they mentioned something like that on your acceptance letter, they can't drop you from their school for any reason.

Yeah, although this is a very good policy to have, it is hard to implement it at the very end of one cycle.
I, too, wonder how they are going to drop your acceptances.
Will you still be able to get acceptences after you have put down a deposit?
will a second deposit automatically cancel your first?

OK- so I am not completely sure about dental policy- since it is basically new this year- but for medical schools you are given notice, and then dropped from from the list and an alternate is given the option to take your position.

I guess UCSF and UCLA have been sharing lists for a while now, but this year at a national ADA meeting it was discussed to include ALL dental schools.

And Ana (at UCSF) made it pretty clear to me that it was no joke....

Sure they can...all school reserve the right to be able to dismiss any students--even before they start. Otherwise issues like academic suspension would have no substance. Though schools may not follow through this year, it would be nice to see it done for next years' app cycle.
