I just got an e-mail yesterday to pay for my board certification extension with a deadline of only a few days to pay.

I did the option of reading journal articles and answering questions in a test based format instead of doing the full-length exam.

For over a year I've asked ABPN, because I completed my requirements, what was the next step. There was a process in place where ABPN would've then processed my results, gave me a fee to pay and then viola it's done.

The problem was due to COVID they allegedly had staffing and other shortages and told me it was on hold and they'd keep me updated. I checked monthly but after about 6 months of no progress whatsoever I decided to do what they told me-not worry and wait to hear from them.

OK so I did that and I got the warning, paid my fee yada yada yada.....

The problem is that they gave me an e-mail and only a few days to pay. Like most human beings out there, we might fall into a gap where we don't check our e-mails every single day. Things happen. And of course if you don't pay on time you get a late fee. Very sneaky.

I just got my e-mail yesterday. I'm kind of annoyed that it was only e-mail and not a phone call, text or other method in addition to e-mail. Some people don't check their e-mail every day. Some people's emails will get spam-filtered.

Warning people here so they know what's going on.

Very sneaky ABPN. Especially since I spent months doing due-diligence and kept checking your website and calling your organization.

Is there anything else we need to do for the article pathway?

You can actually not pay for 6 years before they will decertify you (or at least put you are not meeting MOC requirements). I know because I waited for the 6 yrs to elapse before I paid up. Next time, I will decide whether I want to continue on this scam of MOC or not. If you are early career, it is probably better to go along with, but once you hit a certain point in your career you may not need to. You can also get NBPAS certification which is $189 every 2 years, and is now recognized by the joint commission and all major insurers.

You have to do all the requirements such as the articles, answer them etc. The problem was I did them but because of the alleged shortage they didn't process my re-certification for over a year and then told me to wait. So I waited. Then they finally tell me to pay and that I only had less than a week and if late pay a late fee.

Dude that's real sneaky. You know they are hoping to cash in on late fees when you only give a few days warning on people waiting well over a year.

I heard about this. I might do this when my next certification is up.
I did this, but was also told to keep my APBN cert from the IME firm I work with - they felt that it would continue to be necessary for expert witness work. Not sure if this is just their opinion or a universal recommendation in the biz.

I have paid for 2022 dues. Is that what you were missing? I finished all the articles a year ago. It says my articles are due in 2024

I paid for the dues for 2022. No it was to recertify using the journal articles. Back in what was it, 2020, they were supposed to process the article completion and then sent me a bill. Then the mess I mentioned above happened. Was waiting for months.

I did the journal articles. They haven't sent me anything. I reached out to abpn. My certification was in 2012.

Slight non sequitur, but what is the earliest one can take the boards while in residency?

After you're done with residency....

You can get a full medical license while in residency which is a different thing (which is what lets you do outside moonlighting generally). You aren't eligible to actually take the board exam without a signoff from your program director that you've completed an accredited residency.

They won't verify you to take it until after they get confirmation from your residency that you completed, and that happens at the earliest in July. The soonest date for certification after that is in Sept, but you apply with intent to sit for it in like Dec/Jan and then schedule the date/prometric location in July once you're confirmed.
