He was compared to Sutherland..........

For the record, on the grand scale of geniuses AT Still isn't even ranked. I am fairly sure he was an extremely creative cross-dresser though.

I doesn't take a genius to pull **** out of your a$$ w/out any scientific bases, just look at the founder of chiros.

How about when he realized that the standard of care at the time, MERCURY, was more harmful than good?

Q, DO

Personally, I don't think A.T. Still was a genius, but I do think he had cojones of steel to go against the "scientific" medical establishment of his time even at the risk of losing everything he had. As a result of his "reform movement" we now have an excellent medical system, one that has been embraced fully by the mainstream medical community and the general public.

When I purchased a copy of the Merck Manual, it came with a facsimile of the original 1899 Merck Manual of the Materia Medica (the allopathic physicians' "bible", widely used during the time A.T.Still was alive). Have you read what drugs were being used and what "treatments" recommended? (hint: arsenic, mercury, vomiting, bleeding, blistering...) In the late 1800's both A.T. Still and the general allopathic establishment were pretty quacky. Both systems, however, evolved to the point that they're both now complete and effective medical systems.

Ever heard the term "crazy wisdom"?!

Gotta admit, he started a good thing...for one, DO programs offered postitions to women far before it became regular practice in the allopathic programs.

Anyway...
Some crazy AT Still quotes
"Sickness is caused by the stopping of some supply of fluid or quality of life"...Autobiography of AT Still pg 310
(ok so he was never very specific)

AT Still on Evidence Based medicine:

"Osteopathy is a science. Its use is the healing of the afflicted. It is a philosophy whic embraces surgery, obstetrics, and general practice. An osteopath must be a man of reason and prove his talk by his work. He has no use for thories unless they are demonstrated" Research and Practice, pg 10

Actually the Womans Medical college of PA was founded in like 1852, which was before A.T. STILLS came and helped out woman.

Notice how all those in DO school come to post in the Allo forum praising how much a genius still is.🙄 You guys have such a complex. I was a psych major in undergrad and I don't go around saying Sigmund Freud was a genius. He pulled **** out of his a$$ just like still did with no scientific proof. Like sigmund fraud, still was a founder of an obsolete school of thought.

You are an absolute idiot. All your posts on this forum are unreasoned and offensive. Your profile is indecent and childish. You are going to be a horrible doctor, so shut the PHO up and go away...forever.

Andrew Taylor Still was the founder of osteopathic medicine.

I've always thought that medical history was pretty interesting. I wonder if people 50-100 yrs ago thought that they were practicing evidence based medicine. One of my prof's told us all that less then 50% of the medicine that we are currently practicing is evidence based. I think that we are much better about these sorts of things these days though, largely because the FDA and it's tight regulatory process. I only wish that more private docs out there would participate by reporting more side effects that they see happening with different drugs. I'm certain that there's tons of drugs that are increasing your risk for getting certain diseases by small enough amounts that they wouldn't be picked up in clinical trials, but they would be picked up when examined on a population basis. Who knows, in 50-100 yrs, they may be looking back at all of us and laughing at what we are doing now.

ckent - very good post. I've never thought of that before. I bet we will all look foolish in 100 years for some of the treatments we employ. I think being aware of that might keep me a little more humble.

Yes he was. Because of him, there are twenty DO medical schools. And one of them is my dream school. 😍

I can't believe this thread is Still going. There are duplicate threads in this forum, osteopathic, and premed, and they're Still going? After a century, there is Still hostility toward legitimate alternative philosophies.

Am I Still writing?
