my friend recently completed all of her dental school prereqs at a local community college. She will be attending a 4-year university in the fall to take some upper level science classes.

her final GPA at the community college : 2.9 overall, 3.0

I told her that going to a community college is already a disadvantage and having a 3.0 there is like having a 2.0 at a real university/college.

She cried when I told her that and she is now in despair.

It depends if she asked your opinion. It seems like you were likely mean and honest.

Well, a lot of DS to accept CC credits, but some absolutely do not. She needs to research that. As far as comparing a CC GPA vs 4-year Univ GPA, I'm not totally sure. Tell her not to lose hope. She just needs to kick a lot of @ss at the 4-year Univ.

She'll eventually cry.
Cry now or cry later. You made her cry now.

Good job, it helps to be honest, you're gonna be telling a lot of people bad news as a dentist, even if it means being mean.

Maybe this will motivate her to do better. To prove you wrong.

You were being mean! There is nothing wrong with completing your pre-reqs at a CC (unless you want to apply to those east coast schools that doesn't accept them). Either way, she will have to step up her game and improve that GPA.

Naw, I would've said:

"The world needs ditch diggers too kiddo!"

Once she settles down, tell her to join SDN and come present her case. She will love you after spending a few hours with the sharks on here.

And post a pic so we can really get an idea of what we're dealing with here.

She can always be your dental assistant.

pretty sure you're waaaaayy exaggerating that conversion. no way it's a -1.0. a 3.0 GPA isn't great anywhere, but you took a little liberty there.

 you're always asking for pics on here man...you know how I know it's time for you to put that DAT book down and go out for a bit...? haha

Some people need to be told the truth. She should have already known her chances were low, but I guess she had to learn somehow. Look at it this way, you saved her lots of money from applications.

Haha, +1. She should have no problem (assuming she works hard). She already has the background from the CC meaning the classes shouldn't be THAT hard for her.

I think telling her a 2.9 was very low was suffice enough. Didn't have to be harsher than that, she is your friend after all.

Does she have a good chance if she gets a 3.5 + GPA at the 4 university and a good DAT score?

It really depends on how many credits go into that 3.5+. The more she takes, the easier it will be to raise that CC GPA.

You were being mean and honest. I am curious to whether she asked for your input or not.

Let's assume all of the credits she will be taking at the 4-year university (60+). She is really a smart girl but was in a tough situation.

that was an AWFUL thing to say.... and completely unnecessary....
People turn things around, she probably didn't take college too seriously and ended up with sub 3.0 performance. Maybe she can turn it around at the university, who knows.

If you want to be a good friend, encourage her to do better than 3.0 performance, because otherwise, shes going to have a very difficult time making interviews (yet alone an acceptance).

It can be done. Tell her that and make up.

I'll be honest with you, based on the bolded you seem like a dumb *ss.

I do agree though that she needs to up her academic game. Her GPA is low but assuming she has two years left at the university she can have a 3.5 by the time she's finished.

Also, CC can be more difficult than your average 4 year.

Here is what you are going to do.
Take her out to dinner. You pay of course.

Tell her that you were just kidding to see how much she wants to be a dentist -> She cries -> You give her a big hug -> tell her that everything is going to be alright as long as you are here -> She cries more -> tell her that she looks amazing when she cries -> she laughs -> tell her that her teeth look nice -> she hits you on your shoulder -> tell her that she has a good manual dexterity, the level of a dentist.

You know what to do next. Happy ending.

make-up sex is the best!

why not encourage her to work hard and raise her GPA instead of putting her down?...while your comment may have had some* truth, you don't sound like much of a friend. dick move. end of story

Aside from being mean to your friend, that's some major generalization you're making there. There are a lot of CC courses that are much more demanding than those at a 4-yr.
