I recently interviewed at Wash U and really liked it, however, many people are telling me that the residents are not happy there. I did not see this at all. Someone told me that they are overworked. Does anyone know if this is true? Any info about their program would be appreciated.

Hi Beans,

I'm a CA-1 at WashU right now. I'm glad to hear you liked our program. I myself am happy with our anesthesiology program. I too feel that the residents here are overall happy. I wouldn't go so far as to say we are "overworked", however, I would say that we work harder than at an average less busy/easier program. That being said, you will be doing excellent cases in EVERY area imaginable.

Also, now that we're over half way done and we've already started taking call, I'd note that although we don't take call the first six months, you work pretty hard M-F but weekends are off. So it's a trade-off. But once call starts, it's much nicer to have that post-call weekday off in addition to your non-call weekends off.

One problem with WashU in my opinion is it's location. It's sometimes a hard sell to get people to move to St. Louis. It's no Chicago or Boston, but it's a pretty affordable medium sized city.

Anyway, I hope this helps. Feel free to post any other questions. Good luck with the match!

I agree with Beans. I think Wash U has a great program but yet doesnt seem to get mentioned that much. I am concerened that they didn't fill half of their spots last year. During my interview I was told it was due to a combination of the program ranking too top heavy and that last year's CA-3 class had poor morale. Is there anyone who interviewed there last year (or last year's CA-3 class) that can tell me what they felt about the program? Any input would be greatly appreciated.
