I'd like to apply for the Olin Fellowship, but I have a question. The essay question for the scholarship is very similar to the question for the AMCAS personal statement. Would it be wrong to re-use parts of my personal statement for the essay? Thanks for your advice.

I was just wondering the exact same thing.... I was even thinking of reusing my AMCAS statement. The program is open to anyone, and they don't receive your med school application. I'm guessing they just need something from people who dont have to write such a statement to apply, like master's students.... but I'm not sure.... I just don't know how to re-write a personal statement without it being very similar....

you can't have the Olin, its mine! Mine I tell you! 😀 😍 :luck:

Exactly. If I try to re-write, it's just not going to be as good.

calm down! I think they average 3 a year in the med school ....... maybe it can be all three of us! 😀 :luck:

wait i thought the entire packet was supposed to be filled out by a third party?

Question: Olin apps are due Feb 1, but is this a rolling deal where it's basically pointless to apply now or what?

I didn't apply to WashU until they sent me a 'recruitment' packet of sorts in the mail that highlighted the school's program and emphasized the merit scholarships available (esp for women...hence alluding to the Olin I think). So I researched the school and got my app off ASAP, but wasn't completed until 12/29 and interview invitation came in 1/10. I'm interviewing on 1/30 and was thinking about going ahead and applying for the Olin. It sounds like most people that are applying for it received the info on it after acceptance, but I won't have the luxury of waiting for that (if I do get accepted). I have 4 interviews in the next 2 weeks and work 40 hrs/wk, so I don't want to take the time to apply for the Olin if it's basically not a possibility at this point. Sorry for the long explanation (if you've gotten this far!)... Thanks for any advice in advance!

The recommendation packet you're referring to, I think, is for the generic Wash U merit scholarships. The Olin Fellowship is a separate fellowship for any woman pursuing graduate education at Washington University and requires an essay, CV and three letters of recommendation.

I am having such a hard time getting this essay written it's ridiculous. Does anyone know what our chances are in the first place, given that i'm sure every woman who got accepted to ANY grad/prof program at Wash U will be applying for this fellowship?

There are about 50 women in the medical school class, and I think they get about three Olins a year.

Wow... I didnt' expect to see many people apply for the Olin... hehe. Only 3 are given a year???? Wash U sent me 2 emails and called me during my interview (at a different school) to remind that I need to fill this out.

Okay question:

Is it pronounced "O-lean" or "O-lin"?

I believe it's O-lin.... rhymes with bowlin'... but i could be wrong 😛

When I interviewed at Wash U, they pronounced Olin Hall this way. So I assume the fellowship is the same. 🙂

Gracias. I just called to check if they got my transcripts and was like "I applied for the Olean/Olin." Shoulda asked before I called... Oh well!

I think that's the other scholarship, the Distinghushed Scholars one.

Because I freaked out when I got that in the mail, thinking at first that I had messed up my entire Olin application (I'm in the middle of both now).

Well I don't know how much this will help you, but they extended the deadline until Feb. 6th for the Olin stuff to be in. So you have a little more time and you won't have to actually send anything in until after your interview (if somehow you DON'T like WashU).

A little bit of bum news here...

The link to the Olin Fellowship website from the medschool financial aid page explicitly states that medical school applicants should not submit an application until they receive the paperwork for it with their acceptance package. In other words, if you haven't gotten in yet, don't apply...

Here's the link.

http://www.artsci.wustl.edu/~olin/

scroll down to the bottom of the page.

I was a bit bummed by this when I saw it.

Use the exact same thing as long as it answers the question. There is no eithical problem with this at all unless its a crime to plagiarize ones self. On second thought you better cite yourself incase you later decide to accuse yourself of plagiarism.

hey does anyone know when we're likely to hear about interviews? I figured that since they supposedly interview in mid-march that we would hear sometime early march, but that's just a guess. In any case, if no one knows, can people at least post here if/when they DO get an invite? Even if I don't get one, I would like to know when I can stop holding my breath 😛

Dunno. I think they said "early March."

I haven't heard anything one way or the other about the Olin or the other scholarships . . . I'll post if I do hear!

Good luck 🙂
