This is kind of a silly thing to argue over, in my opinion, because everybody has certain reasons for going to specific schools. It's interesting to read this because I'm sitting here in Wash U's med school right now, I'm in genetics research. After working here for a year, I have determined a few things. This school is excellent if you are interested in pursuing an MD/PhD or interested in research. I am very proud to work here.
That said, there is no way on earth I would ever apply to this med school. I've met so many of the people and I just couldn't stand it. People generally aren't out to help each other and I enjoy the camraderie at other schools I've visited a lot more. There are so many smart people here and they are not all losers without other interests, that would be a huge generalization. But many of them are lacking in the personality department and it drives me crazy. The PhD's here, students, and professors are so full of themselves!!! I can't wait to leave but I know this job will help me get into school. I have met A LOT of residents I like though.
One final thing, if you think the area around Wash U is safe you obviously haven't been here much. Sure, the central west end is nice but you CANNOT walk alone down there. Go two blocks north and you're in the ghetto. Nobody will tell you this is a nice are. I'm a runner and there is no way I would run around here by myself at dusk. It is not uncommon for people to get mugged walking from the garage to work at the med school.
Oh well. That's my .02 and I'm sure I offended somebody but this place really is too uppity for me. I'll stick with my state school (well, hopefully, if they let me in) 🙂
Cheers.
