First thing to realize is that the two are completely different books - one is not a smaller version of the other.

The Wash Manual is essentially a Reader Digest condensed textbook - lots of basic science, information that is included for completeness sake, etc

The Survival guide is a truly pocket sized volume that is a totally practical, clinical volume meant specifically for interns. The chapter headings are either specific operations or chief complaints. e.g. there are two pages on post carotid endarterectomy management. There's also a chapter on "patient doesn't look right" per RN as well as chest pain, SOB etc.

I think the survival guide is a great book and is very useful to have in your white coat.

The Wash manual itself is, I think, a good substitute for Greenfield, Sabiston,etc for those of us who are unable/unwilling to read that much material.

I agree with the above...both are good, although I preferred Mont Reid for a mini textbook. The survival guide is a good choice, although you'll probably figure everything out in it in the first few months of internship.

Current allegiances aside, I used to agree with you because I thought Mont Reid read better. However, the new version of the Washington Manual has been rewritten in a manner that is more similar to the Mont Reid book, so now it combines the ease of reading with the (in my opinion) more thorough text.

Absolutely. My comment was not meant anyone from buying the book, but rather a recognition of the learning curve.

I searched on Amazon and other places but couldn't find a new version of the Wash U Surgery Intern Survival Guide. My search is only returning the first edition which came out in 2003. It does look like a newer PDA version is available but can anybody point me to where I find the hard copy version of the new edition? Thanks.

There isn't a new version of the intern survival guide. There is a new version of the Washington Manual.
