Man, I been debating on this but ultamily I think Hofstra is the best choice. Unless you get an equal scholarship or better from WashU i'd stick with Hof.

That relationship with have with the PD is also pretty nice.

Hofstra, easily. Can’t overestimate the impact of your own happiness and opportunities in New York. You will absolutely not be hampered by research at Hofstra.

I would also vote Hofstra. Even after you start medical school, I'm assuming you'll be able to crank out a bunch of publications on top of the ones done during your gap year, which I believe is more significant than the difference in "prestige". Also, may I ask when you heard about the full-tuition scholarship? I was also accepted to Hofstra, but didn't know they already gave out scholarships.

Uh, If your goal is academic medicine in a competitive field, which is what it seems like then, WashU. You wouldn't need to stand out at WashU to be successful, just take a look at their match list. They have practically unlimited resources that'd be at your finger tips. Conversely, just because Hofstra is lower ranked doesn't mean it would be easier for you to stand out.

Name recognition for letters will be important if you intend a competitive specialty. I would lean toward that. However, you may be able to do the same just by having that influential person introduce you to some people at WashU. If you get some scholarship from WashU, I would highly consider it.

I second Avada Cadaver. WashU would be much better for academic medicine. Hofstra seems to be a rising star in all aspects of the medical world, but still does not come close to being WashU level. Have you talked to the Hofstra PD? If he really likes you and you have a good rapport with him you should be able to be completely honest with him and he should also be completely honest with you. If this is the guy who went to Sinai for med school and residency, he should understand your predicament.

Hofstra! (totally not biased or anything). But in all seriousness, Hofstra has done some incredible things and has grown tremendously over the past few years. I'm not sure about the WashU curriculum, but our curriculum stands out as innovative so much so that several medical schools have adopted our style of teaching. In addition, our board scores are within the top 10th-15th percentile in the nation, and the match list is impressive as well. I don't think you will be short of research opportunities here, plus your relationship with the PD seems pretty dope. Lmk if you have other questions!

This is an important point to consider, which is why I'm also recommending WashU.

Normally I would too, but considering all of the points that Hofstra has in this, namely full-tuition scholarship, proximity to New York (vs St. Louis...), incredible relationship with the PI for research, the PD relationship (which will net an incredible letter of recommendation). Hofstra is a better opportunity in this instance.

not sure what sort of extreme driving you are doing... but this really doesn't seem like a necessary or accurate comment
“Horribly scared of/bad at driving”. That’s what the initial poster said. Doesn’t sound like “extreme driving” although I’m not sure what that is. Do you want someone who is scared of and bad at driving reconstructing your ACL? Just sayin

If they're good at doing ACL repairs, then yes.
