When I view my personal statement, the new paragraphs aren't indented like I had them when I wrote it. Is there a way to indent them, or is this just the want it appears?

I never really got mine to indent properly. I wouldn't worry too much about it. Just make sure you've gotten rid of all the wacky MS word formatting.

my suggestions:

1. indenting or leaving an extra line in-between paragraphs achieve the same function. so, if you can't indent, leave an extra line between paragraphs.

2. after you're completely satisfied with your PS and you're ready to paste it into your AMCAS, copy it from your MS word document and open a new blank document. go to paste special, and select "unformatted text." it will now paste without any of the formatting. copy and paste that exact text into your AMCAS app.

I typed it into AMCAS; I didn't copy and paste it. I thought I would avoid some of the formatting issues. I put 5 spaces at the start of each new paragraph, but it didn't show up when I viewed the final product.

an even better way to get your PS formatted correctly before copy/pasting it is to copy it from MS word into a simple text editor like "Notepad" on windows computers.

using notepad, you can give your essay a final look to see if anything is screwed up. then, you should be able to copy/paste straight from notpad with no problems.

If I remember correctly, it'll format it by itself. Before you submit the application, you can view a PDF of how it will look, and voila, there will be spacing between each paragraph. Adding a line between paragraphs yourself might end up in your paragraphs being extra far apart. Just check the final product before you send it off.

Don't worry to much about the formatting of the PS just the grammar! When I wrote mine in order to save space I only put one space instead of two after every period and I did not indent any of my paragraphs but if you have extra characters to waste then format away!

There is space between paragraphs, but no indentation??!!

Is it okay like that then?

Also, is the "Print Application" pdf version the one that adcoms look at?

😕

my guess would be it's ok to have the space between. if you can't indent, others can't indent either. i'm pretty sure they will get an electronic copy that is one big PDF of all your application information (just like you can print it out). previous applicants and/or people connected with ADCOMS, please correct me if i'm wrong.

putting a space b/w paragraphs is just block formatting.....that's what you would do for writing a professional letter

I used the space b/t ...looked good on paper.

also, i'm not sure what version the adcoms look at, but I do know some schools require you to send copies of your primary (from the pdf version)...because they're too lazy and don't want to print out copies for their interviewers.

I recommend leaving a line between paragraphs instead of indents for the PS as well as the secondaries. This is because sometimes the indents or extra spaces get deleted when your send text, and you really need a sure fire way to separate your paragraphs.
