Wayne State University BMS 2011

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Oh okay, thanks. I'm assuming there may have been a mix up because there are a few people with the same last name as mine that have applied. Hopefully I'll receive the email soon.I'm just stressing a bit because Brenda didn't know wheather or not I was accepted only that my file had been reviewed and that the sent the email out yesterday.

Just so you know, both acceptances and rejections went out today.

Is there a facebook group for the WSU BMS?

I think something may be wrong with their e-mail system. I just called their office today, they told me I was admitted and that they had sent me an e-mail yesterday...but I never got an e-mail. I recommend just calling them if you have not heard back yet.

Question about the Wayne State MBS program

Basically, I missed the deadline of June 01...this is the only program that accepts students for the second semester though, so there's another deadline October 01.

If I applied and got in for the winter term, where would I stand in terms of the program? Would I just graduate one semester later than "standard" MBS students?

Also, how good is this program as far as getting into medical schools? I couldn't find anything about guaranteed interviews or acceptances, but I hear that 1/3 of MBS students go to Wayne State SOM. How about other schools? Does it have a chance for UMich? OOS schools like University of Virginia, EVMS, or MCV (I'm a VA resident 😀 )? I just wish I could either see a statistic of how many go onto med school, or a list of who went where, etc.

Most of those questions are answered in previous posts in this thread

-call and ask the school about the graduating thing, I would assume you're right

-The only statistic they keep track of is matriculation to wayne. No guaranteed interviews/acceptances.

Hey everyone! It's nice to see people getting a bit excited about the BMS program. I finished my first year in late April and am currently applying to medical school--fingers crossed!

If you're wondering which classes to take for the first semester, most of us took 8 credits. At orientation, they recommended that we take BMB 7010 (Biochem) and PSL 7010 (Physio I). Some students took more than 8 credits, but most of us felt that BMB and PSL were more than enough to keep us busy, especially those of us who work.

Also, note that you'll need 20 credits to apply to Wayne. I took 8 credits my first semester and 12 credits my second. Taking 12 credits at once was hectic, so maybe try to do 10 and 10 if you feel you can handle it (though I still recommend starting with 8 for the first semester).

If you have more questions about the program, feel free to message me. I look forward to seeing some of you around in the fall!

I have heard that it's possible to complete this program in one year. Is that not true? Or is it just not recommended? If 12 credits was difficult, how could someone take 17 credits each semester to meet the 34 required?

For those of you who have been accepted, could you please log into your online application for the BMS program and tell me what the message that was posted was, at the bottom of the page? I am kind of confused, thanks in advance.

In the message center, I got this: "Recommend to Graduate School for Regular Admission into the MS in BMS Program. Manatory Orientation Friday August 26th. Advising available prior to Wednesday August 31st start of classes. R.J.Pauley 7/1/2011"

But...under the "Admission Decision" column, it still says "Decision Pending". Ha so don't pay attention to that.

Awesome thread! I'm appying here for the winter 2012 term bc I'm applying to DO school right now (my back up plan is to go here and try again if I'm not admitted this time around). Does anyone know how DO schools feel about you doing your SMP at a MD school?
I want to be an osteopathic physician but if I end up doing a SMP (lets hope not :xf:) I would want to stay in Detroit where I'm from plus what better place then WSU to prepare for medical school.

Yeah I have a question about the Winter start to the program. If you start in the winter, do you finish in the summer or the following fall? I didn't want to start in the fall and (if i get accepted to a DO school) not be able to finish the program. It would probably take a seat away from someone who would probably do the full year

I'm pretty sure you finish in the summer plus I've heard that you can set your own pace so if that's true you can definitely finish in the summer =)

Whatever you do you won't be taking anyone's spot because they don't cap the program at any number of participants. They accept everyone who they deem is a "good applicant"

Does anybody know where I can get a list of the students who are attending this year's BMS Program? I am looking for a roommate at Riverfront Apartments and I am interested in rooming with one person. Let me know if you know anyone who is interested or where I can get a list of people in the program. Thank you.

I was supposed to be notified if I was accepted or not by today. Do they send an email or is it supposed to be on the Grad Admission Application Status page???

They notify you by email. You should call and ask Brenda if you don't have a response yet.

😀
Do you think I can get into this program with a 2.94 undergrad GPA?

I don't see why not. The program is for people like you or me with these types of GPA's . I would take the MCAT instead of the GRE b/c I think it would look better. But don't tak e my word for it

Do you think I can get into this program with a 2.94 undergrad GPA?
I wasn't sure whether I'd get in with my stats (I had a 3.02 sGPA in undergrad and a 3.48 cGPA), but it seemed like they took a fair number of people with stats similar to mine. It's hard to say what they'll be looking for at any point and how competitive it is for certain years, but it's always best to try! I've also heard that it's less competitive if you start winter term, so if you don't get accepted for Fall 2012, you can also apply for Winter 2013 later.

Good luck! Let me know if you have any more questions.

Hi everyone, let me start with I love this forum and all you guys do. I applied late march or better early april in this program and I was wondering when will I be expecting an answer from them. I want to call them, however I worry I will bother them too early. Thank you in advance for your answers...

Hi there! I applied in late March of 2010 and heard back in mid-May. Since it was a couple years ago I realize that the dates may have changed, but I remember hearing that they would get back to us in June. Some of my classmates didn't hear until later in July or August, though; I think it depends on how many people are applying and how many people accept their acceptances.

If you still want to call you'll probably speak to Brenda, who is an extremely nice woman who is unlikely to be annoyed with you. :]

👍👍👍

Thank you so much, the idea of not knowing until July :S or August 🙁 just throws me off completely but o well, it is what it is... Since you are already in this program would you be able to know if I stand any chance at all with a 25mcat and cUg 3.1, bugger I should have studied more when the time was right. Hopefully they give me a second chance, after all who is to say I should not pursue medicine...right? :scared:

Sorry--I'm not too sure what the requirements are in terms of GPA and MCAT. My undergrad sGPA was 3.02 and my first MCAT was 28--numbers not dissimilar from yours. I think it probably varies based on the applicant pool. As I said in an earlier post, though, if you really want to do this program and don't get in for the fall (though I'm hoping you do!), you can always apply to start winter term. This helped some people who weren't accepted the first time.

I think everyone deserves a second (or third, or fourth!) chance at medicine if it's truly what he or she wants to do. The BMS program allowed me to prove to myself and to medical schools that I really can handle and excel at this work, and I hope you get the opportunity to do the same.

Best wishes.

Thank you once again for your time. I guess all I can do now is sit and wait hopefully I got to start with the fall class. However, I still have no clue if it will help me out with my MCAT score and that score is my third one, but I guess I will have to ask them whenever they contact me. Good luck to you with your studies! 🙂

I have a similar profile as yours, and am planning to apply for this Fall admission to BMS, would you please tell me, if you ended up getting admission into BMS, and eventually into med school? That would be really helpful for me to plan accordingly. Thanks!

I start the BMS program in the winter and wanted to know which courses I should register for.

I am a psychology major with not only pre-dental pre requisites completed. I have not taken any physiology or anatomy courses as an undergrad. Only took cell bio, micro bio and biochemistry courses. I want to know if I will be able to succeed in this program granted I put in the work.

Please suggest courses that I could register for in the winter. I have seen it mentioned above that endocrinology is relatively easy (are they referring to PSL 7680?). I was also thinking of taking PSL 7030 because I have been told to stay away from immunology during my first semester.

Also, if anyone has old notes/exams/lectures from the program PLEASE PLEASE dm me and I can give you my email so that you can send me that stuff. I really want to go to dental school folks and am very determined but my situation with my poor grades is holding me back and I don't want to mess up this program so please help me.

Thank you
