Hey all!! =)

Wayne is definitely my # 1 choice for pharm school (I live 20 minutes away.. which is definitely a plus. I actually went there for a semester).

For anyone that was accepted recently, could you let me know your stats (gpas, pcat, ec's..ect)?

Also, I know they do rolling admissions for their med school.. and I'm assuming their pharmacy school as well.. when do they usually do their 1st round of interviews? And-- how were the interviews? I know someone told me that you won't get invited until December, is that true? I've read the feedback, just wondering of anyone elses perspective? thanks!

My stats:

C. GPA: 3.75
M/S GPA: ~3.5
PCAT: Took once w/ no score option; but i'm pretty sure 60+.. probably in the 70s.
Pharm Exp: ~30 hours
Volunteering: 170 hours (hospice, meals on wheels, operation abc)

Thank you to everyone for the responses! And good luck w/ the rest of the admissions process!!! 🙂 😍

My stats:

C. GPA: 3.65
BS in Biochemistry
PCAT: 62 Took once in Oct...the very last date for 09 applications and got a horrible score in math and science because I ran out of time. Should have prepared more lol
Work Exp: Worked for the FBI for 2 years and the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health for 1 year.
Volunteering: 350 hours (hospital/free clinic)

I'm pretty sure the admission process is mostly over since the last interview was at the beginning of the month. Interviewing started officially in December, but I've heard of people going in late November if they applied very early. I of course waited until the very last day to apply (Dec 1) so I didn't hear from them until Feb. Don't be stupid like me. Apply early and you'll have a better chance. 🙂

I was so nervous at the interview, but it really wasn't that bad. They start my meeting you with an adviser so you can see what remaining pre-reqs you have to take. Then you have a tour with a P1 or P2 student which is my favorite part because the students will answer honestly and they are not there to judge you for the admission process. Next you have 30 min to answer an essay, and then the interview. I was shaking because I was so nervous, but I think so long as you show a lot of interest in the school/field and do a little research on pharmacy you should be fine in answering their questions. Less then a week later I was notified that I had been accepted.

Since you are from that area, can you give me a bit of advice and where to live? My boyfriend works in Novi so we are trying to find someplace that will make the comute about 50/50 for us. We were thinking of Royal Oak area. What's your take on Southfield?

Wayne recieved my application in October, along with some other schools. While I already got invites from Notre Dame and CCP, I didn't hear back from them until the last week of finals before Christmas break. I don't believe they do traditional rolling admissions like midwestern. Also, if you look at the admissions chat, they started interviewing people on January 7. I am pretty sure they are done with everything because I got in a week and a half ago. My interview was on January 7th.

Your numbers are fine. They'll interview anyone with PCAT 50+ and a GPA 3.10+. After that, it's up to you to make yourself shine in the interview.

Hey! Thanks for such a thorough response! 🙂 I won't be applying til this upcoming cycle, I'm just trying to get all my questions figured out beforehand. What kind of ?'s did they ask you? And the essay, what was that? So you'll be going there? How exciting!!!

Royal Oak can be kinda expensive, I think. It's considered a nicer area. Southfield, I was actually just out there this week, it's not too far from the college, I can't say exactly how far, but definitely not a bad commute. Also, I bet that would be much cheaper than R.O. I don't live on my own, so I can't give you great #'s, but I'd definitely say that Royal Oak is a "nicer" area, but Southfield would be more "economical" ((from what I've heard from others)). Royal Oak has a lot of clubs and fun places downtown, which are pretty popular [not sure if you care about that, but thought I'd throw it out there].

I also wasn't really thinking they have traditional rolling admissions.. from what it sounds like. Congrats on getting in! Wow, you interviewed on Jan 7, and just got accepted? Don't schools generally send you invites in the 2-3 weeks after? I don't foresee too many problems w/ interviews, what was your take on it? Are you going to be going there?😎

Thanks for your input! The nightlife does appeal to me which is one of the reasons why we're looking at Royal Oak, but you are right about the apartments being more pricey.

The essay questions are all ethical questions such as "what would you do if you caught a classmate cheating" or something like that. There's really no right or wrong answer, they mostly want to see that you can form complete sentences and that you aren't psychotic. The interviewers didn't even read mine, just glanced at it to see if it was completed. As for the questions, I can't remember them in detail since it was 2 months ago but they were mostly like:
"why do you want to be a pharmacist?"
"what do you think the responsibilities of a pharmacist are?"
"what problems do you believe face pharmacists in the future?"

There used to be a section on this site where students posted questions they were asked and gave their opinions of the interview process but I can't seem to find it now. Also there are live chat sessions that allows you to chat with current pharmacy students at Wayne state and ask them questions about the school or admission process. However, it seems that the next chat for pharmacy is Aug 12th.

Yeah, the nightlife down there is pretty fun 🙂 and i think it's close to ferndale, which has quite a bit of fun places too! Thanks for the help! I didn't know about the live chat sessions, so that will be very helpful!! =) Are you from around here?

I got accepted elsewhere, but it is a private school and I would be saving 30,000 compared to going to Wayne. I made friends here over the years and I didn't want to leave them. Plus, I have a boyfriend in Chicago and going to school in Arizona would have been quite taxing on our relationship. I have a friend that goes there and she said from here on out, the courses will change for the upcoming class, but some of it will still be the same... I believe she said there would be less "useless homework" to do. :prof:
Unlike some schools, I found Wayne's interview questions quite unpredictable. I even warned a student who was looking through a bunch of answers to questions her friends told her they'd ask.
The first time I applied (later waitlisted), it was more like:
"What are your weaknesses?"
"Why Wayne?"
They looked at my resume and noticed I was from California.
"What are you doing here?"
"What qualities do you have that pharmacists have?"

This year:

"What were you doing in New York?"
"What do you mean by 'thick-skinned'?"
"What are you doing in Michigan?"
"What did you learn in art school, and how can you apply it to pharmacy school?"
"What are you going to do if you don't make it in this year?"

Ask a lot of questions, smile (but don't appear fake), keep it cool in the waiting room and socialize, ask good questions during the tour and study the student course outline, and if you get the chance to pass by your interviewer, say hello (I did all this, and I think this is what helped me out in the end).

I lived near downtown Ferndale for three months (I carpooled with roommates). It was a bit of a journey (10 minutes) to get to the freeway, and it was approximately 10 minutes to get on Warren. There are amazing places for groceries and it's a lot cheaper than Royal Oak.

ETA: They assess each student as accepted, deny, or conditional. If you read the first couple of posts on the Wayne State thread, I said that they will accept the 'cream of the crop' students first, then look at a bunch of the other interviewees that they consider 'conditional' after all interviews are done. It is around this period when they accept majority of their students. Anyone who is deemed 'conditional' that doesn't hear back will get waitlisted (which, in my opinion is a straight rejection).

I'm from Flint, so I'm kind of familiar with the Detroit area.

Sorry this is a bit off topic but xshooshix where did you take the new required Bio 3200 class? I planned on taking it at Oakland, but they are taking forever processing my guest application and since registration started a week ago I'm worried that it's going to be filled by the time I get in. I'm pissed at myself for forgetting about that new prerequisite.

Awesome, thanks for all the info!!!!!!
The interview ?'s don't seem TOO bad.. hopefully I'll be on my toes.. =) When do most people (month-wise) seem to get accepted?

Yes and it's quite a pain in the arse especially since it seems only the bigger colleges have equivalents and they are also usually only held in the fall.

I don't know about which month most people are accepted - March I guess? Some people hear soon after the interview, but many don't hear from them until March after all the interviews have been completed.

Have you taken your PCAT yet? If you haven't, don't do what I did and try to cram 3 days ahead of time 😀

I've already taken it, thank god, the one semester I went there 🙂 And no I haven't.. I did the no score option for practice last year, but the plan is start studying in June for Aug.. so hopefully that goes as planned 🙂 haha

I took it at Wayne last fall. For anyone applying to get in Fall of 09, they will only accept the students who took the physio class this summer. It will be the school's only exception. The first time the class was offered in the Fall was a MAJOR disaster and many students complained.
