How do the rest of you handle weak residents in your program... Ones who show little initiative or interest, admittedly are not interested in anything more than dentoalveolar surgery on completion of the program... Ones who seem slow picking things up, continually write orders wrong despite being shown properly, can't take out teeth, our even suture particularly well... I mean, I know the new residents have only been in 9 or 10 weeks thus far, but given that the one in question has already completed a one year oral surgery internship elsewhere? If there is one thing residency has done to me, it has been facilitation of a complete destruction of any vestitude of patience I may have once had for people like that... Or for babysitting...

We havent had that problem since i've been here....Good luck.

Have them take more call, that should do it.

Maybe consider flogging them?

They frown on flogging female residents, these days... And we've maxed out the call already...

Basically, we hooped...

Are you at UIC?

place them on probation, follow protocol, then kick them out. i have no sympathy or patience for lazy or dangerous residents. It is the residency's duty to teach the resident information and technique. It is not the residency's responsibility to motivate.

If this is the chick I'm thinking of, then I would CYA and document everything.

Reading this thread shows you that what you see on paper ain't what you get in person. I am suprised that after a fierce competition for admission , you still end up with lemons. I would rather take a weak applicant on paper but eager to learn than ones with stellar GPA, Board scores but completely unmotivated and lazy. It is unfortunate but the ones with the best "front" win regardless of what is "inside" of them. DP

The bad part is that you say she has completed a 1 year intership somewhere else. The letter from that program should have mentioned that she was worthless.

Most of the time after fierce competition for OMFS and many other specialties, the directors get outstanding residents. They're great on paper and in person. I would bet it's an exception to get a lemon. That is why IcedOMFS brings it up. It's an unusual happening in surgery.

I heard last year an ortho resident dropped out in September or October at a program. That was terribly upsetting to me. It was too late for this program to fill their spot w/ someone else, so it was left vacant. The thing that made me most upset was I knew people who hadn't matched the year before. So, this guy takes a terribly coveted spot and then quits or was driven out (I don't know which happened). After all the fierce competition (as Phan decribed) and then a vacant spot. Ridiculous.

Yeah, just look at OMFS_RES....he matched.

Therein lies the problem.

I am at a program which does not hesitate to ask residents who are not up to standard to get their act together. Residents are placed on probation and if no improvement they are given the option of resigning or being formally asked to leave the program. Out of 5 residents that have left the program over 7 years not one of them has been a woman (and the program graduated 5 women during that time). It is very frustrating when people leave early in the program- someone else should have had the position. I would also say that it is important for residents/staff to document things carefully and in an unbiased manner. These situations can get ugly!

I'm going to go ahead and say it. Losing 5 residents in 7 years does not sound like a resident problem, it sounds like a program problem.

Not really, I look at it as our program is not just going to let people wade their way through thier 4 years and graduate. There are expectations that are set, if you can't meet them you don't finish. I think some people have the idea that I made it into the program and it is now my right to be an OMFS. You still have to earn it at our program (unlike some others that I have heard are graduating everyone- even if you aren't competent).

One of the guys I did not know. 2 of they guys honestly would never have finished the program- either due to lack of motivation or lack of clinical smarts. 1 left for mental health reasons, and 1 I think kind of got a bum wrap (he actually transferred to another program). I do think that the two that just would not have finished were problems with resident selection (we now have a new program director). But in the end I think we are a much stronger program for not carrying the dead weight. It's not like we all live in fear of being thrown out, all of them were put on probation and given a chance to remediate. There are plenty who got whipped into shape and some decided that they just couldn't hack it. I really don't see a problem with it. When talking to friends in other residencies whose program directors don't deal with the issue it is a much larger burden on the fellow residents dealing with incompetencies.

It is a shame that some people drop out when there are several people who would do anything to have a spot and work hard at it.

Going back to the OP, I agree with scalpel2008 and it is time for you or for the program director to give proper repercussions. I am tired of students or residents getting away from their responsibilities. Heck, they signed for it and went through the application and match process, they knew what was demanded of them.

No, not UIC. I take it you are?

No, but I know a current resident there that is piss weak....and I thought that person could have been your co-resident.

residents without enthusiam and lack of interest?wow iam hearing for the first time.Though iam a foreigner it is totally unacceptable. So what does the program chief says,i heard they have an assessment for all resident's,so how do they manage that.Well i understand if it is girl but how about guys.Well as far as i see the world is same without an exception. It is a pity that so many people committed to the profession sometimes are discouraged with these events and it is even more worse when they are denied omfs program.

Welcome to America. Here we hold women to the same work performance expectations as men. 😉

 Some famous quotes come to mind.

"There is land of opportunities in US of A. For man, construction work, taxi driving and accountancy. For woman, as a prostitute."

"We say in Kazakhstan, "You find me woman with brain, I find you a horse with...Wings.""

"In America, women can vote but horse cannot! It is the other way around in my country."
