i just got back from an interview at duke, and was mightily impressed. but going back to read intransit's review of duke, both people seemed to feel their research was weak. what's the deal?

I had a similar reaction when I visited. I was very impressed by the school, but at a loss for why people would think the research wasn't as strong. I think part of it is that there aren't as many labs as you'd find at other schools. However, that absolutely does not mean that the quality of the research is weak. For instance, as a completely arbitrary measure, Duke has just as many HHMI investigators as WashU and Penn. So there is definitely good research there. For me though, the bottom line is that I was impressed with the faculty I met with. I would say if you felt the same way, ignore the reviews, and use your gut. Don't let a website dictate your opinion of a school - even if it's a good one.

I'm not sure who's circulating that around. I graduated undergrad at Duke last year, and my experience was that research is thriving there. Especially if you're interested in BME, the new facilities are incredible. The school is putting lots of new buildings up and hiring new faculty (they just picked up Peter Agre a couple weeks ago). As far as I know, Duke's research programs are strong and will only be getting stronger.

see, that's what I thought! 😕

I AM looking at BME, and it seemed good. glad I usually go with my gut. now they just have to accept me! 🙄

If you haven't already, I would encourage you to post your own review on intransit. It helps to have a diversity of impressions/opinions.

i would strongly encourage that you post a (counter)review if you felt that the ones on there that didn't really 'understand' duke. the point of the reviews is not to be authoritative, rather a compilation of individual's opinions about a program. perhaps the reviewer was looking for a specific research area that wasn't well represented, which led them to comment on duke unfavorably - i would urge you to submit a review that best reflected your impression of the place - it woudl be most welcome.
