I have always wanted to attend the University of Tn pharmacy school and said that if I ever got an interview there that I would where a tie with the school colors which are white and orange. My gf's dad says that I shouldnt wear it b/c it wouldnt be proffesional, but I feel that at an interview they are trying to get to know you as a person. So I wanted to wear the tie to represent a part of my personality, I love bright colors, also I love to stand out in a crowd, since Im going to be in a room full of ppl with dark suits and red ties, this would make me stand out. I am not trying to wear the tie to win points with them at all, this is just something that I truely want to do, so what do you think???

the thing you want to keep in mind, you want to dress conservatively. the white and orange might not be so conservative.
i understand you wanna show your personality, but bottom line, you wanna be professional and conservatively.

I think it's a great idea, but don't wear a super loud orange shirt.
Maybe the shirt under your jacket can have orange and white accents. That way you can still be professional, but show school pride as well🙂

It would be conservative, and im not trying to wear bright orange shirt lol, I just want to wear a white and orange striped tie.

You should wear the orange suit from Dumb and Dumber

 I think someone should wear a bow tie!

I think that tie would be nice looking if it weren't too bright.

Those colors striped would remind me of an orange creamsicle... mmmm.

You might make your interviewers too hungry for sweets and they rush you out of there faster than they would otherwise to satisfy their craving, not giving you adequate time to state how good you are for their school.

A novel idea, but I'd be careful of it's disadvantages as well.

I would not wear these colors to the interview. If you want to stand out, you should do it by what you say, not by your choice of clothes.
Besides, they might think that if you wear university colors, you are too confident of acceptance. You are not a student there yet, so do not wear their colors. Stay on the conservative side and wear something dark.

A tie like one of these wouldn't be so bad (the first 2 are better, imo):

I say go for it. I saw a girl wearing a purple business suit to my interview - this would be tame in comparison. Plus, you'll likely be wearing a suit jacket for most of the interview, so it wouldn't be too loud.

Haha DO IT!!

But really, I think it might be okay. If the tie was a dark enough orange. Whats wrong with the black suit and red tie though huh?! 😡

Thats the exact one that I have ^^^^^ the one with the orange and white stripes!

That might be too out there. The first and second ones IMO would look much more professional.

You might nt to play it safe here. Professionalism is a big part of pharmacy and is urged quite a bit now days. A tie like the one you describe can possibly take attention away from you on your interview. I realize that you want to stand out, but try standing out by maybe having a unique portfolio or interview skills. Remember that there are alot of applicants fighting for few slots,,,do you wanna gamble that on a tie? I was thinking of doing the same but decided to play it safe. My councelors recommended me not to do it, and that was enough. Either way its your choice and i wish you the best of luck in getting in the school you want.

I'm resurrecting this old thread because I had the same question! What if I wore a white shirt and a solid orange tie like this guy?

I've been going to UT for about 3 years and getting my BS from there, so i don't think it would be taken as being too confident, since I'm already an undergrad there. I think it looks pretty professional, I was just worried that it might look like I'm trying too hard, lol, but I've already got the tie (wear it on game days).

Honestly, I don't think that anyone's tie choice is going to make too much of a difference one way or the other--unless it has something inappropriate on it, something that really makes them take notice, negatively. It's your demeanor, record, and communication skills that they'll be judging you on, and wearing school colors tastefully can be a conversation-starter.

An orange tie is perfectly professional, in my (admittedly, completely amateur) opinion. But I'd say go for it. (Also, take note--the OP seems to have worn his orange-and-white striped tie to his interview, and was admitted.)

Enthusiasm is a great quality to have in an interview. There are so many people that go to an interview and are so straight laced and stiff that it is uncomfortable for both the interviewer and interviewee. I think that your color combination is both professional looking and attention getting (in an acceptable way) and that it would be a good choice. And you WILL DEFININTELY stand out from all the black, brown, and navy monochromatic interviews for sure. Go for it.

Remember, there is something to be said for having an undercurrent of "trying too hard" energy during your interview...it shows eagerness and enthusiasm and those things are really refreshing qualities in an interview. And you can have all of these things and still conduct yourself in a professional manner. Good Luck!!

You def should wear orange! it'll pep you up for the interview. you'll feel like 10x better cuz your representing the school and how you will fit right in!

Only an orange and white tie 😴😴😴

You should go all out and wear an orange and white suit 👍
To top it off, you should wear a big nametag/button (or just bring a sign) that says "**** you Lane Kiffin!!!"

Yes, because the UT kids and Tenn. residents are just being huge babies ... coaches leave schools for bigger contracts. It's life, live with it.

Hey - a lot of Vols fans are pissed right now so this would be a good way to get on their good side. I get why he left. Not only does he get to live in SoCal, he doesn't have to fight tooth and claw for recruits with every other SEC school since Tennessee isn't know it;s hs football (unlike, say florida).

Another way you can show school spirit is with silk pocket squares.

Thanks for the input and advice everyone! I never even thought of a silk pocket square. Would that be overdressing? Do most people wear pocket squares? And it's the way kiffin left that had everyone mad, he left at a very inconvenient time. And he also tried to take the students he had recruited for tennessee with him to SoCal, which would've left tennessee really high and dry.

Yeah I understand that. And the fact that he never "clicked" with the school. I feel bad for their new coach. He's gonna have a hell of a year. I do think that UT will be better w/o Kiffin but this first year they are in shambles.
I still think writing "I hate Lane Kiffin" on your nametag (I'm assuming they give nametags - maybe not though) would be hilarious

No, I don't think pocket squares arent the norm in this era. I still keep a couple silk squares around for special occasions. It depends on your definition of overdressing. I don't know how they dress in the south so it might be?

And he didnt try to take the students he recruited with him. The only thing he did was the proper fair thing to do for the students and their futures. The students were recruited by 'X' coach for 'X' coach's system. If 'X' coach isn't going to be there, it's only right to inform the students that he won't be there and to rethink their options. By NCAA rules, if the early enrollees even stepped foot on campus and enrolled in classes, they would have to sit out an ENTIRE YEAR if they wanted to change to a school & coach more suited for them. All he did was inform them about their options before the school term began ... some are still going to UT, some arent. People try to spin at as some nasty dirty deed but truthfully it was the best course of action if you put the student's futures first before petty childish hating on a coach that left. You don't see Cincinnati rioting because their coach left for ND (at an even WORSE time with no regard to his current or future students). You don't see USC rioting because their coach left randomly out of the blue for the NFL (a couple days before Kiffin left UTenn). Heck, Florida isn't making coffins and burning t-shirts because their coach can't make up his mind about a leave of absence/retiring.

If you were a grad student going to a school to work with a certain professor, the professor asked you to go to 'X' school but then takes a position at 'Y' school. Wouldn't you, as a student, feel shafted if the professor just took off without letting you know? A lot of the times students will follow the professor to the 'Y' school ... happens a lot in grad school. I have a classmate who moved across the country because his advisor took a new position at the Harvard Medical School and moved the entire lab with him. The advisor straight up told my friend that he was leaving and offered a spot in the lab once they moved.

I'm going to go against the grain here and say ABSOLUTELY NOT.

It's extremely presumptuous to show up wearing school colors. Under the circumstances of an interview, it would say to me that you think you are getting in and are already part of the school. I am in a sorority and if a girl shows up during recruitment decked out in our colors and in our jewelry, etc, it is a big no-no. They choose you. Once they choose you, THEN you wear the colors.

That doesn't sit well with Vols fans. Though if I were a Vols fan, I would be pissed that this happened and they covered it up. If he really didn't like the school that much, he should have been exposed, canned and replaced by someone who did.
I don't think that USC fans had anything to complain about with Carroll leaving. He left pretty much w/o controversy and there as been speculation for years and now. And Cincinnati fans were not pleased. Their fanbase is not nearly as rambunctious as UT, so that may be why we won't hear about them.

And about moving schools, after Carroll left and before Kiffin was announced as HC, Matt Barkley called all USC recruits and told to them to stay because (paraphrasing) "You came to play for USC"

I feel we're gonna get yelled at for :hijacked:

lol I guess we can carry on a discussion of NCAA politics elsewhere. There's a lot of behind the curtain drama going on at USC and Florida as well that the public isn't aware of... either that or a lot of silly gossip.

Back on topic, I do think an orange tie might be overkill as a prospective and not entering student.

Hopefully (for the schol and himself) Kiffin doesn't do anything dumb. (He always struck me as not so bright)

I don't think a plain orange tie would be so bad. Actual checkered might be a little overkill but I don't think that's any different than someone wearing a striped tie. (I remember someone's ti was like maroonish and blue) I was trying to tell my friend about conservative dress when I was shoe shopping. I hate shopping, especially for shoes, but my dress shoes are a bit big and tend to fall off if I go up stairs or walk to fast (that shoe didn't come in a wide fit so I went the size up). I was saying something like "oh, but I don't think I should have shoes with sparkley jewels/rhinestones on them" and she didn't quite get that. She thought that shoes wouldn't matter and I was like...I don't want my shoes to be a disco ball

Do you still think it'd be presumptious if I'm going to the school now, just as an undergrad? I think I'm gonna wear it either way now, the positive comments out weigh the negative and an adcom even said it would be a good idea. Thanks for your input though!

And I have to get wide fit shoes too! 4E's! We have big feet.
