Hi everyone,

I'm a 4th year medical student applying for peds right now. I know many will think this question is petty, but it is an actual concern of mine right now. I am planing my wedding for the spring of my intern year. Has anyone else gotten married during their intern year? I'm trying to figure out if it will be difficult to get time off for the wedding/bach party etc. I'm not delusional enough to think that I will be able to have the "typical" wedding experience during my intern year, but wondering if any peds residents got married their intern year and how they handled planning around these events and their wedding! Would it be better to push it to fall of second year? Any advice/help would be appreciated. Feel free to message.

Even interns get vacation and generally a program is going to prioritize giving you vacation at the time of your wedding. Honeymoon may have to be delayed or shorter than most people would like. Getting vacation for the wedding and a key weekend or two off should be manageable as long as you plan/request early enough. The real problem is all the planning/coordination that you'll have to take care of in and around your normal rotations but how painful that is will depend on how elaborate your wedding is and who you have helping. I don't think you need to push it off into the second year. You do need to pick a date earlier and request vacation at that time and softer rotation leading up to the vacation and get that information to your program shortly after you match.

I got married during my intern year in March. I found it pretty doable. Had a bachelorette party on a golden weekend.
As above, I was in the newborn nursery in the 2 weeks leading up to my wedding. Worked the day before (though my attending let me leave early). Had 2 weeks of vacation with my wedding as the first day. I was in the NICU for the month prior to the nursery, which was a little stressful, but I had help from a wedding coordinator and my mom.
One co-resident got married intern year as well and his wedding was in the middle of his vacation, so he had a week off prior to tie up loose ends.

It's certainly doable. I got married during the Spring of intern year. I scheduled a week of vacation around the wedding date and had a honeymoon the last week of June when all the interns had time off. I had an early bachelor party before med school graduation. You just need to plan ahead.
