I was wondering if you guys think this gig is worthwhile?

1. $50/pt encounter (whether new or FU)
2. Have to cover at least one unit, but can cover as many as you want
3. 1 adult unit (10 beds), 3 teen units (20 beds each)
4. Have to see adults twice in the weekend, and teens only once in the weekend.
5. The call itself is pretty light, like only a few calls a weekend
6. Have to get own malpractice bc they don't cover 1099s

This is pretty low in terms of renumeration.

You're 1099 so their rates are a low-ball since they assume you're desperate and stupid. Your money will also be pre-tax which will take more out of your pocket. Plus your own malpractice and oof this one hurts.

Just counter them to something you'll feel okay taking. I'd suggest roughly double what you're being offered. Something like 75/fu and 150/new -- as well as I suggest a fee for taking call (like 400-700 for the weekend). That would be more fair for a resident. Still on the low end but more fair.

$200 per hour on site. $50 off site. Should at a minimum fall somewhere between $3500-4500 for the weekend. At least it did years ago…. Not even accounting for all the inflation that’s taken place since.

Yea, that offer sucks.

Where I’m at residents can pick up paid shifts helping cover consults on weekends for $500 for 5 hours (typically see 4-5 patients) or cover the inpatient unit overnight for $200 (home call). That’s all in house, so no extra license or malpractice needed.

Outside moonlight our residents can work at our state hospital at $100/hr for 12-48 hour coverage shifts. For a whole weekend average is 35-40 encounters which is somewhere around $120-140 per encounter. $50 per encounter as a 1099 requiring your own license and malpractice is not good. One of our fellows contracted with a local group to do consults at a private hospital and got paid $150 per new and $75 per follow up for another reference. $50 for a new patient is insulting.

For attending doing inpatient work; whether locums tenens or regular 1099 coverage of a unit, rates are the same now as they were pre-covid. And more of the work is being put on the doctor- orders being entered into the emr etc.

Yeah, I immediately thought it sounded like a terrible deal. I just wanted to make sure that I wasn't tripping. Thank you everyone!

The chain of men's barbershops near me charge $47/cut with a basic shampoo and can do 4 clients/hour if they are really humming, 3/hour is customary. I don't believe they carry malpractice insurance. Do you want to be paid the same as someone who does relatively basic cuts on men's hair?
