Weekend

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I guess it depends on where you go. My school had tests every 3 or 4 weeks, so people would go out the first and second week and then study the last 2 weeks. If you study every day like you are suppose to you should have plenty of free time.

but is it normal to have the regular Friday night and Saturday night out partying and maybe a half day Saturday or Sunday chilling? I mean can you do all that and still do really well? also do most people spend the weekend volunteering or doing research?

👍

this is exactly how we are structured (tests every 3 weeks). the first two weekends there is (typically) plenty of free time, but the third weekend is 10-12 hour days (for me; obviously different for other people)

Nice to hear we well have at least some time to relax.

you will. it can get VERY busy at times for sure, but the key is balance. i typically have time for the gym 5-7 days/week and i can spend an hour before bed watching TV. prioritizing your time is probably one of the biggest adjustments you'll have to make.

you have plenty of time for a lot of things. i have plenty of time for the gym as well. of course i never go, but the time is available if i choose to.

Zoner you should look at the fireside chat thread in pre-allo. You'd save a lot of time creating useless threads with answers that will vary from shool to school and person to person.

Absolutely. Work hard and play hard. It's easy to find time to take a full day off and go out. Noone I knew in med school regularly volunteered/researched on weekdays. This isn't undergrad. Sure, some did those things, but definitely not in the same frequency.

I think it's pretty common to go out 1 weeknight to have wings and a few beers with your friends. Then go out either friday or Saturday night. Then watch a football/basketball game on Sunday. That's what I did and I finished in the top 20%. It's not a huge deal.

Volunteering is worthless for your residency application, by the way. You should do it if you like it, obviously, but don't do it for your residency application. Few people in osteopathic medical schools do research. So, no, not many people are spending their weekends volunteering and doing research.

The first few months of med school will be a shock, but once you get into a groove, it's pretty easy

There's 2. The first one already happened but it was recorded and is on YouTube. I think every premed would find it worthwhile and very helpful.

Some weekends are free, some are kind of free, some are not free at all... Just depends on test schedules...

Good sex, a bit of alcohol and a lot of studying. That will be my goal at least.

Med school is not as hard as a lot of people make it out to be. I'm not saying it's a damn walk in the park - my blood pressure and immune system would tell you different. However, it's not some unattainable feat that requires you to be nine places at once.

What it does require you to do is not be a procrastinator. The minute you say, "I'm going to put this off until tomorrow," is the minute that you're playing catch up for the rest of the block. The best medical school analogy in the history of medical school analogies follows:

Med school is like making a commitment to eat 25 pancakes each work week (5 pancakes a day). This won't be so bad, you say, you like pancakes! Monday and Tuesday you eat 5 pancakes each day. By Wednesday, though, you're kind of sick of pancakes so you decide to take it easy and only have a couple. Thursday, same deal. Now, it's Friday, and you're 6 pancakes behind... so now, you not only have to eat the five for that day, you have to cram in 6 more to make up for taking it easy during the week.

Typically you need to get in at least 3-4 hours of studying each day during the week and then a solid 10-12 on Saturday and Sunday. Most of us take Friday evening and Saturday night off. Sunday night is usually spent preparing for the week.

Weekend before the test... all bets off. At least a solid 14-16 hours of studying a day.

how does one find time to cook, i feel like i will starve during med school lol

👍 I am learning how to cook and it takes me so long to make a simple dish. idk how I am going to resist the urge to order take out in medical school to save time/energy.

Same, unless you make leftovers for later??

Learn to make meals that take <15 mins.

Or...use the almighty cooking tool: Microwaves 😀

But really, once you get the groove of the med school routine, you can find an hour out of the day to cook a good meal. The general rule of thumb is that if you can't take an hour to do something non-med school related, you are doing something wrong.

if im reading the thread right i think you just eat pancakes, and they don't take too long to prepare

OR just be super rich and hire your own personal chef.

haha only if! if I find anyone with a personal chef in medical school, I will definitely be making best friends with this person.😉

my boyfriend is a chef 🙂 where did you decide to go by the way?

Dudes I slept 9 hours a night, took one day off a week, and finished a mountain climbing course first year. Finished 3/75 student and rocked all boards. It isnt that bad. Just be efficient.

LECOM-B! still holding onto some waitlists so nothing is final. Congrats to you for on deciding on DMU.🙂

Thanks! I'm glad we both had a productive cycle! Well if your waitlists dont work out I don't think you can go wrong in Florida. I meanwhile will be freezing up there in Iowa.

definitely glad for no snow in Florida. DMU is one of the places I am WL at so who knows maybe we both will end up freezing in Iowa together.😉 Although the chances of that happening are pretty slim.
Did you end up getting in at KCOM?

I did but ended up going with DMU. That would be great if you got in off the waitlist! Would you choose frigid DMU over sunny FL? I imagine there will be some waitlist movement. It seems like a lot of people have been posting on SDN that they turned down their DMU acceptances for other opportunities.

if I can afford to put down another deposit and the timing works out, then probably yes. don't hold me to it though because chances are even if DMU decides to take me (their WL doesn't move until June-July), I would have probably already moved to FL by then because LECOM starts school in July. I guess , I'll just wait and see what the universe has in store for me.:xf:

We use the hell out of our crockpot! http://budgetbytes.blogspot.com/ we also use that website a lot and another one called 365 Days of Crockpot.

You can make up a huge batch of taco soup, freeze it in freezer bags, and just drop the entire freezer bag in medium-hot water in a pot and it's ready in like 5 minutes.

I almost never ate out this semester and did fine. It's not as tempting as you'd think - some days you just want to go home and not run around town wasting time.

I love to cook. I'm an OK cook, so using my year off to perfect my cooking skills. My mom is teaching me to cook Indian food in case i get homesick. Also learning to batch cook things, freeze them then reheat em in a way which won't make it gross.

I actually study the least on the weekends and get all my studying done during the weekdays.
