Weill Cornell Class of 2011!!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Open bar???!!

Well, if for some reason, anyone has entirely too much time on their hands, and wants to post the revisit itinerary, I'd be interested in seeing what else they have planned for you all.

Enjoy your weekend guys! if it's anything like my revisit in Jan, you'll have an Absolut blast. HA! get it? GET IT??!!!..........ahem...........***cough***.

I'm there in spirit, hope you all have an unforgettable time. After all, isn't that the purpose of revisit weekends?

Did you do a personal revisit or are you MD/PhD?

Did you do a personal revisit or are you MD/PhD?

I knew I would miss the revisit weekend, so I did a personal visit in January before I moved out of the country. I currently live in Sydney, and I wasn't about to spend another 1200 bucks on a plane ticket to visit my future classmates. I'm sure you guys are awesome anyways..........at least I hope so! A class of a 101 students(ish) is only going to feel smaller if you don't like the people you're going to spend EVERY WAKING MOMENT with. **silently prays to the medical gods for awesome classmates***

does anyone know if we are staying with hosts this weekend, or if the school has open rooms in Olin? when i got my email it just said I have a room....just wondering...see you all on friday

Should be a great weekend guys. 120 of you all are slated to attend.

docs: I believe that if you asked for a host, you will get one. Do you remember specifying?

Just got back from second look and I am really psyched!

One question: there's a thread in the allo forum basically blasting a PBL curriculum as a fate worse than death. I don't think there's a single voice defending PBL on that thread. I went to the mock PBL during revisit and it seemed ok to me....fun, even.😕

Anyway, I hope everyone had a great time!

PBL isn't bad. I have been doing it all year. It helps get you ready for the wards. Plus, if you have ever worked in research that is the type of thinking you will do all the time if you want to go into academic medicine.

Macbeth (or anyone else), any other thoughts on SL weekend?!? I'm hoping all of guys are cool and excited to enjoy NYC 🙂 I unforunately could not be there, but I am trying to arrange my own second look in early May. Any current students have any suggestions of a good time to come and visit? I want to try and sit in on a couple classes and possibly attend a PBL section just to see how it is set up. I don't need a host since I have some friends who live in NYC that I can stay with.

Also, was there any important info given out during SL? Was there a handout with the names of those who have been admitted or anything like that? I'm pretty much between Cornell and one other school and am having a tough time making the decision!!

We are on break in a week. We return the next week. However, Thursdays are our clinic days. We are all over the place. So don't pick a Thursday. Some Mondays are exams.

Ok, so I searched for the facebook group and couldn't find it, so I went ahead and made one! Everyone join! 😀

Hey guys!

This is my first post to SDN EVER! 😀 lol Just thought I'd share 😉

Anyway, I'm 95% sure that I'm going to Cornell in the fall. There's 2% of me that is still really scared of sending HMS an e-mail withdrawing my acceptance...but I really felt happier at Cornell. I believe the environment at Weill is more what I'm looking for, and I feel like their program and teaching philosophy treats students more like independent adults than any other program I visited.

BUT, there's 3% of me that keeps searching for validation that I'm not completely insane for saying no to HMS for Cornell. I've found this validation hard to come by, particularly because I haven't met many people that 1) are going to Cornell for sure, 2) consider it their first choice, 4) turned down "more prestigious" schools for Cornell OR 3) (and most importantly) are excited about it!

One of my main draws to Cornell *IS* the chill/relaxed nature of the student body, so maybe I'm just contradicting my expectations, but I would like to be in a class with students that are really happy/excited to be there! I haven't come upon a whole lot of school pride... it seems like there's a lot of Upper East Side NYC pride, but not a lot of WMC pride.

Anyone have any thoughts?
Let's get this thread going again! Some of the other class threads have left this one in the dust 😉

Thank you fickleflicker for reinvigorating this thread. I had a great time at Revisit Weekend, but I must admit a lot of the enthusiasm has been stifled by the lack of activity on this thread.

Like you, I'm 95% set on Cornell...as far as your choice, someone told me recently if you go to a school with more "prestige" yet feel miserable there and, possibly as a result, don't do too well, you will suffer more in the long run than if you were to go where you felt most comfortable and thrive.

I've turned down Harvard in the past, although not HMS, and have never regretted it. I believe I went to an equally incredible school which I enjoyed that much more because it was my gut choice. Keep in mind also, that rather than "giving up" Harvard, you'd be gaining Cornell and all that comes with it, including the incredible affiliated hospitals and facilities...just food for thought, you do the dishes.

Yay! A Reply!!! 😀

What comprises your 5% of hesitation capt?

I'd say about 2% is dependent on Cornell's financial aid package, which I hear tends to be really good, and the other 3% is the fear of turning down another great school that would be closer to home.

I'm officially set on Cornell and am super excited!! Just sent all my other withdrawal letters yesterday/today. It was a little nerve-wracking so I had my brother put the letters in the mailbox, but it was also rather relieving to actually know where I am going next year!! You are more than welcome to join the facebook group. 😀

Cornell was always one of my top choices and after thinking it through it just makes the most sense for me. My choice was more between two other schools that were in similar rankings with Cornell and after looking at fin aid, location (NYC is close to home and I want to be in a big city), programs, curriculum, research opportunities, and clinical exposure, Cornell just seemed like the right match. And I agree with Cpt Nemo that sometimes going to a more prestigious school just because it is more prestigious but is not where you would be happiest might not be the best choice. Good luck with your decision and hopefully we'll see you at Cornell next year!!

Yeah I definitely agree. It's hard to swim against the current sometimes though, because it's a strong one. I'm not kidding when I say that people I literally haven't spoken to all year stop me on the street to congratulate me on HMS, almost exclusively! It's a weird feeling to have multiple options among the top 20 medical schools in the nation and only be congratulated on one!!!

But I want to be at a place that makes me happy, and I think Cornell will make me happy more than HMS will. Some of my reasoning:

I like the idea of spending my early 20's in NYC and be in enrolled in a program that allows people to actually ENJOY their early 20's in NYC. I like that research is not pushed down student's throats, yet facutly and researchers are open to working with medical students. At HMS, for example, every student has to complete a "scholarly" project before they graduate, and I got conflicting reports from students on how willing researchers are to take on medical students. I talked to students who got immediate responses, and others who are still without a summer project because they received 30-40 negative responses from faculty unwilling to mentor them...
I like that the school takes pride in its facilities and invests in them. Although shiny, pristine facilities won't make you a better doctor, it's nice to know that you are training in an institution that takes pride in how it portrays itself, and that invests to stay in the cutting edge of technology - both in educational resources and in medicine. (This is not different in HMS though, their facilities are beautiful)
I like the student body at Cornell. I personally don't have many close friends in college who are pre-med, because I tend to run away from the intensity that surrounds the track. However, it's... well... impossible to run away from pre-meds in MEDICAL school... right?!? lol And so, out of all of the students I interacted with, Cornell students seemed to be some of the most chill, fun, relaxed, and well "normal" (if that works at all) medical students. Students at other top 20 schools seemed very personable, very driven, very intellectual, very intense. You KNOW they're going places and FAST, and that appeals to some! But for ME, I like driven intense intellectuals as classmates, but I don't necessarily seek them out as work-out buddies and hang-out friends, you know? I can study with them, but do I want to LIVE with them? and I don't think I do... Cornell students seem like people anyone would enjoy both inside and outside of the classroom... which I think ties NYC for the school's major appeal.

There are many other aspects of the school that make it great, like its match list, affiliated hospitals, international opportunities, etc. But those I rambled on above seem to be those that carry the most weight in my mind.

So as you can probably tell, I'm probably headed to Cornell in the fall lol 😀
I just really want to find others that are as excited about the school and as conscious about how great it is as I am!!! I know that as soon as I get that feeling, I'll switch to 100% sure. So for now, let's just work on getting other excited souls on this list, and unto the facebook group! 😉

I DEFINITELY agree with you on this one. I felt that all the students seemed really laid back and that they actually had time to enjoy NYC. I spent a summer in new york and I'm excited to spend my mid 20's there. There is so much to do! An example: I was up in NYC in April and went to the Apollo Theater with one of my friends and got to see The Sugarhill Gang and Tyrese FOR FREE! It was awesome. Not everything in NYC has to be expensive. Most of the museums are either free or highly discounted for students as are all the broadway shows! I saw Glengarry Glen Ross for $15-20 with Alan Alda and Liev Shrieber. Also, amazing. I also avoid pre-meds. I'll see how that works out for me in medical school 😉

You sound like you really want to go to Cornell. Just DO IT. No peer pressure or anything. 😀

FYI: I'm part of the class of 2010, and I know many students here who turned down Hopkins (including me), Upenn, Yale, Stanford, Columbia, WashU, and UMich. And I believe plenty of the students at the revisit (at least I hope they are truthful😛) are turning down UCSF, Columbia, Upenn, and Hopkins (only from those I spoke to, I'm sure there are plenty more) to come here next year. I ultimately went with the student body I liked best, and I really really really like the students here. You seem to have a good sense of your incoming student body here. Go with the gut (although of course I'm biased), but HMS is obviously a terrific institution with unbelievable resources. Good luck. Just wanted to let you know you're not the only crazy one out there going against the grain (the grain being USNews).

Hi - I went to Cornell's 2nd look and at first thought it was great but not amazing ... but by the 2nd day I LOVED it. I really think the curriculum is stellar ... I believe in PBL and they clearly do it right. I also am really excited about being in NYC ... and I think that the kids there are really cool. It was a little bit of culture shock coming from the Midwest from undergraduate but I am up for it. By the end of 2nd look (ie: after 36 hours) I felt like I already had a handful of friends and it was cool.

SO ... I am 90% set on Cornell ... having recently crossed off Northwestern for their horrible/terrible/no-good/very-bad financial aid (they met almost ALL of my financial need post-EFC with high-interest, unsubsidized loans whereas Cornell was much better in that respect).

I'M EXCITED!!!

Hello hello,

I had my mom send my withdrawl letters yesterday....I agree, it is a little unnerving. On the other hand, I am EXTREMELY excited about living in the UES next year.

Since I didn't get to attend the revisit weekend, what was everyone's favorite part of the trip?? I'll go ahead and live vicariously through all of you...

I also got my financial aid package a few days ago, and it was not too shabby at al (it even made my parents happy, and they are DEATHLY afraid of me falling into debt). Whoever mentioned the subsidized loans was right, they are quite generous.

Hmm ... I did go to 2nd look so I will answer ...

My favorite part I think was actually the student panel and the alumni panel. The students were pretty honest with their answers to questions and there were about 8 of them there. They had pretty different backgrounds (traditional/nontraditional, interests, etc) but all thought Cornell rocked. They also were good at alleviating my concern about the honors/pass/fail grading system, and had a lot of insight into the area, making things work with NYC/UES, the opportunities, the research, and the hospitals/rotations.

Right after that was the alumni panel. Honestly, I expected it to be these boring old people and yeah yeah yeah, what do they know, they went here forever ago. But honestly, these people were SO admirable that I just thought wow - that's the kind of doctor I want to be. They had gone on to amazing residencies and then done amazing work - one managed a clinic in a low-SES area, one did high-risk OB/GYN (I think), etc. It was one thing for the current students to say, yeah, they liked it ... but it was a whole other thing for these physicians 20 years out from their undergraduate medical education to say ... with all their experience, knowledge, and hindsight, YES, Cornell was definitively amazing and worth it.

OH - also, something you may not have seen or even know about is that they just completed and are opening a new simulation center for the medical class. I say this because when I interviewed in January it was not mentioned and our tour did not go up there - and many of the people at 2nd look had not heard of it. It's a really great facility in a new building right next to the Olin dorms ... on the top floor there are all-new practice rooms for the pseudo-patient-actor-sessions and they also have one of those amazing life-like dummies that responds to medications and has a pulse/HR/BP/dilating pupils/etc. They have a dean in charge of coordinating those facilities and integrating it into the curriculum too, so I'm sure it will be well-used.

thanks a ton msz. I had never heard of the simulation center, so that's definitely something to look forward to. Any chance you had a family doctor who worked in the Bronx on the alumni panel??? She was one of my interviewers, and really liked her.

If we're talking about the same person then she was my interviewer too! And she was awesome! I didn't go to second look weekend either though, so I don't know if she was on the panel or not. And congrats on sending out those withdrawal letters and for being official Cornell M1s. 😀

I also agree that Cornell fin-aid is pretty amazing.

Yeah, she had just gotten back from a three year stint in New Mexico (where I call home), so we hit it off extremely well. We then rocketed into a 20 minute conversation about the uses of chile.... My other guy was Dr. Gerdes, not much of a talker, but had some good information about the school. Any other good interview stories?

I went to NM for spring break a couple years ago, and I have to say Christmas-style is my favorite 🙂 During my interview the two of us talked about her brother who is working for a newspaper in Ireland. I spent a summer studying abroad there and actually had a professor who was also a journalist in Dublin, so we had a lot to talk about. Definitely very laid-back.

We had the same interview duo, since I also spoke with Dr. Gerdes.

Haha it's cool you guys shared interviewers! They seem like pretty awesome people. *I* interviewed with Dean Montano who is a sweetheart. I can't say the same about my second interviewer! He was rough!! The kind that sits back and contradicts everything you say to throw you off guard... yeeeeeah, that kind!

BUT, on a happier note: I sent all of my withdrawals in yesterday.

Wow, great to see this thread come back alive!

I'm 100% going to Cornell and I'm excited! I highly reccomend joining the facebook group. It's now somewhere around 15 members.

I think the student body at Cornell is a lot friendlier and less gunnerish than your average group of premeds. Another thing to remember is that the undergrad is in Ithaca so there are no hyperdriven/need to prove themselves premeds competing with you for spots in labs or shadowing.

See you all at orientation! (opened and closed my post with exclamation points to further prove my excitment 😉 )

Woohoo!! Ok, stupid question... is there anyway to know who's who in the facebook group?? I'm new to this whole thing, so I don't know if there's a way to link someone posting on SDN, to their facebook profile. I'd like a face to add to your wonderful selves!

<3, Monica

haha well, since I'm the one who started the facebook group it's pretty obvious who I am 😀

There's no way to tell short of asking the person. Bt hey, at least the facebook group has pictures to help you get to know some names and you can friend people. I kept in touch with several people from interviews with facebook.

Well,

Since I"m extremely lazy when it comes to making up names...I use the same one for everything, so you shouldn't have too much trouble figuring out who I am....what, you STILL don't know?!!! sigghh, ok here's a hint...........it starts with a D, and ends with an iego.

 love it

Sent in my tuition deposit check. Even more official, though I accidentally wrote it out to the wrong school name! Oops 😳
In case you were wondering, the official name is Weill Cornell Medical College.

I was reading the housing website and read that you can't remove any of the furniture from your room in Olin (except for the mattress). I remember people on the tour saying that some people had brought in full-size beds or replaced the twin with a futon, how is this done if the twin bed frame is still in the room? Any advice would be much appreciated. I was hoping to get a sofa bed (or something similar) from Ikea which would occupy less room but would still allow me to have a full-size bed. Any opinions? Suggestions?

Ooo that's tricky. I'm not sure, but I'd definitely like to have a large bed too!
My host had a fullsized bed in her room, so I'll ask her and get back to you!

In college, I was also told not to use halogen lights or drink alcohol in my room. That worked well.....

After a year with a big girl bed (aka full-sized) after graduating from undergrad, I don't think I can go back to a twin. I'll have to find a way to make it work! 😎 And if you hear anything from your host that would be great!

In college, I was also told not to use halogen lights or drink alcohol in my room. That worked well.....

 I was an RA and those rules definitely did not apply. Same with the no hot plates rule. I think a majority of my school, myself included, would have starved if they couldn't have a George Forman Grill (which are a type of hot plate)

Funny, because of my school's closed door policy, your room was the only place you could actually drink alcohol (or do whatever) without fear of "getting caught." I use the term loosely, since my school was known as one of the worst when it came to student drinking...or the BEST!!🙂 Basically our party culture survived on loop holes around this system..........god we're such nerds.

Can't help with the bed question. Every room I went into just used the twin size.

On another note, anyone heard of Brother Jimmy's? They have 15$ all you can eat (and drink) ribs and beer on Thursday nights! It's in the mid to upper 80's I think. I vote we make it an institution!

On another note, anyone heard of Brother Jimmy's? They have 15$ all you can eat (and drink) ribs and beer on Thursday nights! It's in the mid to upper 80's I think. I vote we make it an institution!

The no removal of beds is a fib. Several ppl have queen size beds in their rooms. They'll take out the twin for you.

I haven't received anything yet either. The info is supposed to be mailed out May 15th. Someone posted this on the wall of the facebook group as an email from the admissions office:

Orientation begins on Monday, August 27th and the White Coat ceremony is scheduled to take place on Tuesday, August 28th. There are two mandatory pre-orientation activities that take place the weekend before Orientation, these are cAMP (the camping trip) and Urban Experience (the city activities). The Office of Student Affairs will be mailing out more information regarding Orientation over the summer so please let AMCAS and us know if you have any address changes. After May 15th we will also be mailing out housing and student health information.

It seems as if we get to do both cAMP and the Urban Experience. That's what I would hope anyway! 😀

The info about the camping trip and city activities was also included in the folder we received at Revisit Weekend. If I remember the wording on it correctly (I don't have it with me right now), it is either the camping adventure or the city exploration. I do hope I'm wrong though, because both would be awesome...
