My cousin is a DO and we were talking today about interviewing. He said that DO school ask natoriously weird questions. He recalled one time he walked in and the first question asked was, "How often do you masterbate?"
Anyone else hear of strange interview questions? Now I am worried even more!:scared:

At my PCOM interview, someone was asked, "How would you explain DNA to a five year-old?"

How the heck do you respond to that one?

I got asked if I liked Country Music and If I knew where Garth Brooks lived at one school.

At another school I was asked if I was afraid of dying.

My answers to all of which were: Yes, Yes, and Ummm...YES!!

no reason to fear death. its part of it all ...

to fear death is to fear life.

That, I believe, is an inappropriate interview question. Thankfully, I don't think it is a common mistake. Interviewers generally receive some guidance on what kinds of questions to ask. If such a question were to be asked, it is probably to see how you will react under stress. Stress-type interviews aren't that common anymore. I don't think they are interested in the actual answer, per se, but in gauging your demeanor as you answer it. Stay composed and politely say what's true for you:

I have no problem telling someone how often I masturbate, but I don't think knowing the answer is relevant to my suitability for medical school. On the other hand, if the purpose of the question is to gauge my comfort level in discussing intimate subjects relevant to the health of a patient, as doctors often need to do, I generally feel comfortable doing so. I have had experience discussing potentially sensitive issues with patients as a wellness coach and as an EMT-B intern.

Ohhh, I heard of an interview where the interviewer was actually masturbating!!! I guess it was a test to seee how awkward situations are "handled".

no reason to fear death. its part of it all ...

Noooo....not really. I love life; doesn't scare me a bit! And yet, simultaneously, I somehow manage to fear death! Kinda hooked on the breathing thing.

😱 EWWWW!!!!:scared:

I agree with you. I LOVE life. 😍 😍 😍 I think I would love to live forever. I don't know why you wouldn't fear death if you love life that much. I am definitely hooked on this breathing thing too. 🙂

The story I heard was the interviewee said "Not as much as I should". Come on, the interview is conducted professionally, you will generally be asked standard interivew questions related to your file. They may ask about your hobbies, family, siblings/children, your past/current location, but they will never ask you something which will be personal like what you wrote. But if they do, tell them "I'm sorry, but I cannot answer your question, it's too personal". Plus would you want to attend an institution which ask its candidates, "So Joe, I see you got a 40 MCAT, 3.8 GPA, your ECs and LORs look great, but lets get down to business, why do you want to do medicine, and how often do you pleasure yourself?".....'Hmmm not as much....I'm sorry your obviously not dedicated enough to medicine, goodbye'.

Now how do you explain to a 5 year old whats DNA? We all have something special inside all of us, this little little thing, which we cannot see with our eyes, called D-N-A. D-N-A makes us who we are, it makes doggies who they are, and all other things.

Yes I know that is not a scientific or very accurate explination, but your dealing with a 5 year old.

me too, i love life.

By the way, it's so nice to come in here to the pre-osteo forum and see some smiley faces....i am going crazy if i stay too long in the MCAT forum🙄
We should have our own pre-osteo MCAT forum it for sure would be less tense:laugh:
😍you all guys.
I hope to meet you all one day.

As for the wierd interview questions i remeber someone was asked "how does it feel to be black?"😱

So.......what's the answer????????😀

I knew someone would put me on the spot, since I so unwittingly left the door wide open. 🙄

Very well: there's simply no regularity to it. Frequency varies on a variety of factors, but it's well within average range, I suspect. However, I don't think it would be the most tasteful, or even appropriate, behavior for me to provide any more specific insight into my personal habits through this thread, or even this forum, since it's purpose is centered around medical school admissions. It's just not apropos.

So the punchline was that they were told they did not have to answer the question. It was merely to get a reaction to see how they act under pressure...mean, very mean!

😱 Wow. Yeah, that is mean. And underhanded, too.

It sounds like something that Gregory House would do. :meanie:

and I would have just smirked at the question and answered, "it is for me to know and you to never find out" ... and laughed.

Someone needs to ask me some of those questions ...

I would have said "Oh, about every five minutes." Looked at my watch ""Well. what do you know!" given them a lupine grin, and...

I think I posted it on allo board, I dont remember the conversation word to word ,but it was something like that:

Interviewer looked at my picture on my secondary application and asked:
-When did you take that picture?

Me:
-About three months ago.

He:
-I think in the real life you look much better...

Me:
-hmm

He:
-Or maybe its just your suit. Yes, probably, formal clothing makes you look very good.

Me:
-hmmm Thank you for the compliment...

wow now thats just crazy, lol

At AZCOM, I was asked what I'd like to see written on my tombstone. Kinda odd, but compared to some of the other ones that have been mentioned here, it seems rather tame.

At NYCOM I was asked how do you play the Didjeridoo and how are they made. But that's only because it was on my application because I actually worked as a professional Didjeridoo player in a pit orchestra the summer before!!👍

The "Master of your Domain" question may have been ask to see how you handle stress. Or (I think) it was to remind us that, as providers, we will be putting our patients in awkward situations, or ask similarly awkward or daunting questions. A kinda...taste of your own medicine.. prematurely. This is along the lines of what Spicedmanna was saying.

Yes, but those questions we ask patients will pertain to actual medical problems the person is experiencing. The answer to those questions could play a key part in treatment strategy. In a professional interview a question about how often you grope your nether region is totally ridiculous. I would bet a lot of money that circumstance never occurred.

The strangest interview questions I was asked were:

What was your most spiritual experience?

How do you feel about being an older medical student (I am not even 30...I was kind of confused)

I admit that compared to these other questions these don't seem that bad, but it just wasn't one of the questions that I had thought about before interviewing.

I was asked who won the golden globes? My interview was the day after but still I wasn't expecting that.

Well for me the strangest questions came from the other students being interviewed! I'm Hispanic, so during lunch, some of the students asked me, "So what part of Mexico are you from??"

I was like..." motha fuc a, I aint from Mexico, never lived there in my life!" But I thought it was funny! And throughout lunch they kept asking me about what I thought about Bush's Border Laws and all this crap! I'm sure ill still get all those questions when im in school in good old hickville Harrogate! haha....

I don't believe it even if it was to get a reaction. There's definitely legal complications with sexual harrasment and such.... but just to add to all the crazy comments that have been on here thus far, I would respond by sitting back and saying, "I think a better question is... how often do I wash my hands (wink)"

LMAO!!! 😍 this. I wish to see how interviewer would react to this LOL.
