Weird Reasons Why You Want To Go To A Particular School/Med School?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
If you can tell me where the tall Jewish boys with glasses are.....I want to go to that school.

I've found that I like a school about 50x more when my trip there ran smoothly. Pretty sad that JetBlue and Delta are responsible for making or breaking my first impressions, but when my luggage gets lost and I sit in an airport for an extra 5 hours waiting for it instead of relaxing in my hotel room the night before an interview.....I probably won't like your school as much the next day.

Every trip where I've had a connection at JFK has been awesome....the food at JFK ROCKS 😀

I'm not sure where they are, but I'll look around.

To be fair, I think after a year (hell, after a few months) of seeing your classmates every minute of every day they earn "annoying sibling" status and are no longer dateable. There are some guys in my class who I'd probably objectively consider to be very good-looking, but I just know too much about them and the idiotic question they asked in class that one time and the annoying way they suck up to the professor or something....aaaand the attractiveness plummets. I love them to death, they're like brothers to me, but that also makes them decidedly un-dateable.

As for weird reasons to pick med schools, these are some of the ones I considered:

1) hotness of interviewer/ other interviewees.
2) lunch quality
3) shiny-ness of facilities
4) restaurant choices in the hospital and thereabouts
5) cuteness of children's hospital
6) availability of free printing (actually HUGE)
7) amount of light entering into the library (also huge)
8) possibility of shadowing a transplant, taking the private jet to the organ etc
9) cool factor of white coat (wearing a long coat as a med student- a big negative for me. Yes, they're nicer looking, but it feels like a much bigger deal to wear a white coat as an actual MD when you haven't already worn it for 4 years)
10) school colors (wearing hideous school gear or graduation regalia- no fun)

It all comes down to the pen quality for me. I will compare each pen that I am given at the interview day and rank them based on ink sharpness, grip comfort, twisty vs. bottom clicky, etc. I don't think I could justify going to a school that has poor writing utensils.

Wait, I was supposed to get a pen? I didn't get a pen! I want my pen! :annoyed:

Just kidding. My weird reason that I wanted to go to school at Pitt or LECOM SH was that both were within commuting distance of my house. This would save me the hassle and expense of moving and selling my house. So, location was a big factor for me.

I don't know about the rest of you, but I think a major pull for my school was that ever so slight potential of being shot-at.....😛

Hopkins? no, wait....there you have much more than a slight potential of being shot at 😀

AH yes...I'm interested in ER/Trauma so I have found myself interviewing at schools in wonderful scenic neighborhoods with beautiful views.. One school pointed out students can get their hands dirty very early and are welcome in the ER anytime because its so busy. First years in their second week can learn to staple people's heads back together because, oh yea, the locals tend to shoot and stab each other on a fairly regular basis all day long. They even pointed out that you can walk from your housing, to class and to the hospital in secure walkways all without setting foot outside! How nice! It's a little scary but it would definitely be an interesting experience for school...and that's what did it for me.

What school is this? Talk about hypersecuritized... It's like the pristine elevated train flying over the Gotham underworld.

UChicago and Yale's architecture make it look like Hogwarts!!! 😀😀😀😀

Proudly dodging bullets at Downstate 🙂

And I'm taller than most and one of very few with glasses 😀

I am thumbs-sideways about the usefulness of this information.

Especially after the application deadline😉

Hahaha I figured as much 😛

Don't worry...I'm sure wherever you end up there'll be tall glasses-clad jewz

Well hopefully you get/got the chance to interview at WashU or Chicago. Both offer top-quality pens IMO. Hopkins, on the other hand, provided no pen? 😕

Lol...I totally would do this. For example, the time that I got a pen from my school that stopped writing within a day...

I want to go to Einstein because of their sweet gym facility right next to their awesome housing that's across the street from the med school buildings.

=D

haha I agree gym facilities are nice at my old school in tampa but kinda ghetto at south end fitness center in boston. I liked our student lounge at USF better too then the one at BUSM from grad school experiences at both.

Although the GMS lounge at BUSM wasn't too bad, just too small and didn't have toasters in it.

But to give BUSM a bit of credit and UF COM a bit of credit, they both have pianos that are available for use to students. I'd love for that as someone who used to play as a kid.

I wanted to go to UNC so that I could keep working EMS and rescue for the same organization as before.
