I'm asking for a friend. Usually I'm pretty good at gauging chances and advice, but his case has me a bit stumped. Goro, I summon your wisdom.

He's a non-traditional, white, 28-year-old student who finished a state college with a 2.4 GPA. He since decided he wanted to be a doctor. He took all pre-requisites at a community college, and got a 4.0 in those last 40-50 credit hours. However, this has only brought his GPA up to 2.7 or so.

After heavy preparation, he scored a 517 on the mcat. This guy is very smart. As an incoming OMS-2, I believe he can succeed, for what it's worth.

He spent the last 4 years working patient care in a caretaker role.

He's applied very broadly, but i would expect his 2.7 GPA to be poison, despite the upward trend (that they're community college credits is worrying too).

My best advice to him would be a to do an MBS, or perhaps an SMP. He's pretty much already been doing a post-bac, kinda. Also, what would you say, and what are his current chances?

If it were me I would do an SMP. An MCAT like that coupled with an aced SMP will open lots of doors, and not just to DO schools, but it will help getting into the established DO programs as well. I'm worried they will get in somewhere to a brand new school that will make their life more difficult than it really needs be.

I do think he could be admitted to a newer school this cycle with such a strong MCAt (like 95th percentile right?) But if it were me I would also apply to SMPs with linkage.

He'll have a decent chance at getting an interview somewhere due to his MCAT and upward trend of his last 40-50 credits. If he's okay with getting into a newer/not as established school then I would take it in run. If he's aiming for higher/not getting interviews, I would start looking to apply to SMPs around winter time.

He needs to apply to any DO schools an those MD schools that reward reinvention. I remember a year when Vandy accepted someone with a 2.9 GPA.
