I have heard many stress the importance of a well rounded education. Why is it so important? Does it really play big role in making a successful MD/PHD?

All work and no play made blazinfury a dull boy.

J/k. As far as I am concerned it is a mark of 'high society.' A well-rounded education may prove successful in expanding your reasoning abilities ie: philosophy, art... and expand your understanding of other cultures/ parts of society (ethnic/ women's rights issues). I highly doubt it would be a limiting factor in being a successful researcher, but it is a factor considered by most (all?) medical schools in the form of humanities and social science requirements.

Well, it's commonly used by my university to justify additional general credit classes they force on us....

Because that class I took on the film industry during the Nazi era has really helped me become such a renaissance man.

Nope, but neither does organic chemistry or half of that other crap in you learn in undergrad. The whole system could be streamlined, but for primarily historical reason these are the requirements. i.e. All schools to get a bachelor's require you to complete a number of liberal arts requirements to get a bachelor's degree. A long time ago you could get into medical school without a college degree, but many of the students were unqualified disasters, much of which revolving around the highly varied high school experiences in the USA, so college is now a place to prove that you are capable of handling more mature coursework. Similarly, there are BS/MD programs, but the common complaint is that the students are too "immature" for medical school after only 2 years of undergrad, so if anything these are shrinking (yet are the norm in other 1st world countries?). Anyhow, it all leads to try to enjoy it cause you got no choice 😀

Hey, Neuronix, since you seem to be a fan of Garfield-without-Garfield, I thought you may like to know that they're going to publish a book of it....
