Hey all. Well, I have frequented this board now and then to see what words of wisdom I could pick up from some of the regular posters (won't name names in case i forget anyone) in this forum. I must say that the helpfulness, intelligence, humor and downright goofiness of many of the posts reaffirm why I want to go into psych and have you all as colleagues.

Alright, enough butt-kissing.

So, i'm starting fourth year and hoping to make the jump from the east coast aaallllllll the way over to the west coast to check out potential residency programs (would love to end up over there).

I was wondering if anyone on here might have had a particularly great experience or recommendations for an away rotation- i.e. particular service, trying to work with a particular attending, etc. Or on the flipside, bad experiences at a particular program (pm me if you like).

I am probably most interested in UCSF, OHSU, Stanford, UCLA, but would be open to any good experiences.

Let me know. Hope all of the current applicants have big smiles on your faces come next week 🙂 .

I did psych electives at Stanford and UCSF. It depends on what you're looking for in a program- the two are very different, with very different populations. I did child psych at Stanford and maybe that just isn't a popular elective, but I got my first choice, whereas I got my 3rd or 4th choice at UCSF. Stanford has strict time restrictions on when you can apply for electives at what time of year- look at the web site for details. They also require you to be officially fitted with a respirator (take note and get the proper occupational safety testing before you leave home campus, if you're planning to spend the summer away.) The child psych experience at Stanford was better than the elective I did at UCSF- small team, consult service, busy enough that I was never bored but slow enough that the attendings had time to make it an educational experience. Stanford's childrens hospital is also very much a specialty center, so there were some very interesting cases. Both are outrageously expensive areas to live in- I found housing through craigslist and Stanford's off-campus listings.
