Can someone please tell me what happened to the program?
Thanks

there are a couple of threads about this already.

west penn recruited a new PD from Mercy and is building an academic department to replace the private group that was there previously.

still officially in the "transition" stage, but more likely than not to come out strong, provided the financial issues with Sheridan are resolved.

Although there are plenty of other threads regarding this, I'll reiterate. For the past four months, there have been several articles in the Pittsburgh newspapers discussing the political/financial conflict between the Western Penn Alleghany Anesthesia Associates (I think around 60 physicians and 120 CRNAs) and the Western Pennsylvania Hospital. I won't get into the details, however, needless to say, it's been an ugly situation.

At the beginning of December, the residents at West Penn did not anticipate on having a residency program. They were entirely prepared to be absorbed into the U of Pitt program, which apparently had agreed to accept most, if not all, of the 40 or so residents. Moral was pretty low for a couple months at the hospital and things just didn't look good, especially with all of the negative publicity.

At one point, I was incredibly disappointed about the entire situation and was not even planning on ranking the program, based on its instability. Then it all changed. The hospital hired Dr. Chris Troianos to take over as Chaimen and Program Director. Dr. Troianos has been the head of Anesthesia at Mercy Hospital for quite some time and is a tremendous resident advocate. I've done several rotations at Mercy hospital and know a few of their residents well. They all have tremendous things to say about him and are very sad to see him go. Although it unfortunate for Mercy to lose such a strong PD/chairmen, this is a huge step for West Penn. He's in charge of hiring an "All Star" faculty and has already taken several physicians with him from Mercy Hospital.

Although the program is in flux, I ranked it VERY highly on my list in front of some very good programs such as U Penn and Emory because I have such faith in their program and know that I would be HAPPY there. West Penn will grow incredibly strong over the next few years and their residents will enjoy working for Dr. Troianos as he is the type of person you want to work for.

Good luck to everyone in the match. I'm counting down the days.

This is all 100% true. Dr. Troianos is awesome. I always sort of thought that West Penn was friendlier than Mercy in general, but that Dr. Troianos was great and now both in one place, spectacular. I think anyone who matches there is very lucky. The "uprising" ended up benefiting the program in the end. Good luck everyone. I can' take much more waiting!!!!
