I am curious if comp offers many opportunities for students to do research. Is it extremely competitive?

There are enough bench research opportunities to go around. You're not going to have time to do any during the regular school year though. There's virtually zero clinical research opportunities.

If you're doing free labor, go to UCI or UCLA. Maybe Arrowhead has some? I'll look into it.

I'm applying to both DO an MD programs this summer and am trying to figure out the best fit. I don't really see myself spending the majority of my time conducting research but I would like to teach residents and medical students. Is this something that is feasible for a DO? I know most schools tend to be more clinically focused. Just want to make sure I won't be putting myself at a disadvantage if I go the DO route.

Thanks!

Clinical faculty or adjunct for preclinical years shouldn't be a problem, and it's honestly not an MD or DO thing. Becoming tenured track and teaching preclinical is typically for PhDs and MD/DO with a lot of research at the MD programs. At DO programs, you can probably get away with teaching basic sciences with your DO.

if you come from a major university, research at western is next to zero. You will need to go around and find some opportunities yourself. Claremont colleges have some, but also limited. USC and UCI are the major ones nearby but it's unlikely they will take an outsider. Arrowhead may provide some clinical research opportunities, I ve seen medical students working on a case report there, so I guess it is an option.
