Silly question here. I am trying to cut and paste my personal statement into the pdf that comp provided but it always pastes it all into one line in the field.

Is anyone else getting this problem?

I believe I had the same problem, you either have to paste it in line by line into the pdf, or re-write your essay in the pdf

I just copy and pasted the whole PDF file into word, and then just deleted teh stuff and added my essay.

With the comment sections of both of those research and teaching comments, I would just write it out in word and tell them to see the attachment. I don't think you can fix taht problem, and that was suggested by the advisor.
