Given that I want to practice in California and I want to specialize and like sunny weather, where should I go?

I would maybe say Western, but since they are so new i wouldn't feel comfortable paying top dollar. For the same cost i would rather go to NOVA. NYU i have not seen, so i cannot comment on it, although my cousin just graduated and had mixed feelings.

why the mixed feelings?

practice in california: western is best bet
sunny weather: western or nova
specialization: western, nova, or nyu (doesn't really matter what school as long as you have the class rank and board scores)

So looking at the breakdown, I see 3 westerns so I would say western.

im in the same boat as you. after the interviews, i had the best feeling from nova. western, although a solid program, is too new for me. nyu is too big, but has a great location. nova is just right....plus it looks fun! academically....my IMPRESSION was that its not cutthroat there, so thats nice if you want to specialize.

i have a friend from florida and she said florida is a good place to live as well and i dunno if u can specialize in western.. so choose nova

Are you going to nova?

it depends on what uop/upenn thinks about me. :xf: i wish i could have it all. florida sunshine, ivy league prestige, and a 3 year education.

Thanks for the advices guys. If I go to Nova or NYU, do I have to take the california board exam after I graduate (I want ot practice in CA)?

from what i have heard, its impt to go to a school where you want to practice. Western in this case since you want to work in CA.

i think the dental schools prepare you for the boards that you need to pass to practice in that area. so any school in the west would be tailoring their curriculum toward the WREB...not too sure how each licensing exam differs though

sounds like you're leaning towards western already but just keep in mind when you weight the pros and cons that it IS a rather new school. i personally would rather choose a school that has more years under its belt but that is just my opinion. do what you feel is the best choice for you.

I am a second year student at Nova right now and there a ton of people in my class from california and the west in general. Nova is private and only like half the students that go here plan on staying in florida. With that said a lot of stuff does seem like it is tailored to florida, but I do not think going to Nova, Western or going to a school in any specific location gives you an advantage or disadvantage to practicing where you want to practice. Nova does prepare students for the florida boards but it also prepares them for the western regional boards (which are in fact much easier than the florida boards). Lots of my friends are going back to california to practice and going to dental school in florida is not going to hinder them in this in any way. As far as the weather goes, it is the middle of December and I am planning on taking my family to the beach tomorrow. You can't beat south florida for warm sun and good weather all year round! (Yes there is a hurricane season but in my almost two years here we have not been affected by it)

don't forget the south florida humidity though 😀

Well if you see your self returning to Cali, then I would say Western...I heard that passing the Cali boards is tough if you didn't go to school there.

don't forget to take into consideration that Western is a new school and nova is not~ think hard about the passing rate of Cali boards...

Great strategy for getting off the alternate list at WesternU. Bash the school and discourage anyone who was accepted from sending in a deposit.

hey vic when were you interviewed if you dont mind me asking? and how did they notify you were on the alternate list, through email?

i was interview on nov 4, and i was notified through mail on dec 2..

Western since you want to live and practice in Cali

Thank you very much for the suggestions. I am leannign toward Western. My only concern is that how western's new establishment will affect my chances for specializing, espcially since the boards are becomming pass/fail.

i believe any of those schools will prepare you well enough for WREB board exam.

Since all 3 schools you are considering are private schools, I would choose the school that you believe you would have a great experience in.
NYU can be fun since it's in a big city and with lots of people. I would like to experience that exciting feeling while I am still young to enjoy it.
Nova can also be fun. It's in Florida, and it seems to have happy students over there from what I am hearing around the forum. Also both NYU and NOVA are more established than Western so you will be taking less of a risk while paying lots of money for your education. And of course, Western can be the easiest choice since you wouldn't have to move out of Cali and transition would be easier.

Some other things I would consider. Campus? City/neighborhood? Class size? Specializing/board passing rates? (not available with Western) Student life on campus? Living expenses/housing? Name of school? (it doesn't matter with practice of dentistry, but the name of school that I will be getting my last degree matters much to me especially after all the hard work and money i have put into getting that degree..)

Try to make cons/pros list and enjoy your happy dilemma 😀
