I'm going to start my undergrad at Western this fall.. I wanted to be clear on the grading system and how it translates when it comes time to apply for Dental school.

On our website // http://registrar.uwo.ca/student_records/transcripts/grading_scalegpa_conversion.html // it shows that students can make A+ if they have a 90% or more. Does that mean Dental schools will see a 4.33?

What threw me off though was a link on that page. This link makes it look like a 4.0 in Canadian dental/med school's eyes is a 90% or more.. What about American dental schools? How do they see an A+ grade?

I just want to be clear on the grading system if I plan on applying to both Canadian and American dental schools in the future.

Hi there!

If you receive 90% or over in any of your classes at UWO, it will appear as 4.33 for American dental schools. If you receive 80-89%, it will appear as 4.0. Good call going to Western. You have a slight advantage because of that....I'm Canadian and go to a Canadian University, but my school only gives out 4.0's. No 4.33's for me 🙁. In Canada a 4.0 is 90% or over pretty much wherever you go (some exceptions).

2thsaver said it best. Just do well at Western, choose the right courses, make sure you take it 1 semester at a time.
You are setting yourself up for success by attending there. I passed up Western for a U of T scholarship years ago and looking back, I should have went with Western.

Thanks. Just wanted to make sure. This might be for a totally different thread but what are the chances for Canadian students to get accepted into US Dental schools? Are we given less preference? Are the chances less for Canadians in various schools?

Chances are good if you have what they require. Of course they give preference to Americans if it is a public school. It seems like you want to know everything right now, but the most important thing you do is do well with your orgo/chem/bio courses in first year. Talk to upper year students about which professors are good versus bad, find out what pre-reqs you need to take certain courses in your upper years.

I suggest you buy the ADEA guide for $10 (online version) if you really want reliable information. It will tell you the number of Canadians accepted each year, etc.

There is a search option at the top right corner, type in some words like "Canadian" and threads like this one will pop up, you will have all your questions answered. 🙂
