Western vs. UW

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Western, obviously because they have brand new stuff with a new school and Cali weather is much better than the dreary Seattle rain.

I may be a little biased because I'm still waiting to hear from UW. But really. Cali is nice.

May be just a little? 😀😀

A good dilemma but a big dilemma.....UW vs. Western......I am a Washington resident. Why one way or the other? Help!
You will be crazy to choose Western over UW. Imagine only 150k debt after 4 years of school compared to 300k+ debt with Western. I would take 150k instead of sunny weather (btw it is really nice in Seattle in summer for about 4-5 months, as you probably now)

Lol, even if UW was 300k and Western was 150K, I would still choose UW.

Oh darn, it snows in Boston, NYC, and Philadelphia... Guess that rules out Harvard, Columbia, and UPenn.

it's ultimately up to you. i mean, you did visit each school so which one did you like better and felt you would fit in and thrive in that academic environment?

Why are people even posting on this, its a joke

I would not discredit WesternU, they have a solid program in place. Unfortunately they are too new, and a bit too expensive for people who have multiple acceptances. Once they establish themselves in a couple of years I believe that they will be a sought after school. I'm sure NOVA had the same reputation when they started in 1997. They are doing quite well now.

ditto and I am from Florida so I like sunshine.

Also, comparing Nova to Western may not be very realistic because it is the only dental school in south Florida and is in Ft. Lauderdale, not Pomona.

why is this a hard choice? UW your state school. You should be use to the weather with 150k in debt only. It would be difficult if it was your state school vs Penn, Harvard etc.

I'm in no rush to get away from Cali weather.. But even I would choose UW over Western.

What? I have been to Ft. Lauderdale several times and it is not that much nicer than Pomona. Obviously you didn't get an interview there and have never seen Pomona but have just read what SDN has said.

UW gogo!
The weather thing shouldn't factor since you've lived in WA all your life and should be used to it by now 🙂

I'm pretty sure Western students go out to LA for the outings vs Ft. Lauderdale or even South Beach plus throw in the humidity and parking in SB

been to western campus and pomona and it's not that pretty..
school is in a complex which used to be a shopping center (just saw the pictures of new building which looks awesome tho)

this is a no brainer = UW

I had a western U interview today but cancelled..I'm def. going to UW, tuition for state residents is abotu 20k which is like 1/4 the price of western and the school is great. But if you are looking to move out of washington I understand, Ive lived in seattle my whole life and went to UW for my undergrad the last 4 years..and it would've been nice to live in a new place (somewhere a little warmer) but you gotta think about what will benefit you more in the future, and that is less tuition and better school (not weather). Hope this helps!

SDN is the only way that people get information in the pre-dental world, I forgot.

I have not gotten an interview there, as I have not even applied. A former resident of Pomona told me that they think Ft. Lauderdale is better. This is not what I was even trying to talk about...it may not be correct to compare the start-up of Nova with that of Western due to the differences in location, patient pool, other schools in the area, etc. sheesh.

These cities are apples vs oranges. Obviously Ft. Lauderdale is better than Pomona. But to be a better indicator here, I'm sure Western students spend there time in LA for fun. So compare LA vs Miami/Ft. Lauderdale😀
