I was wondering if I could get some suggestions. I am very interested in Western, Pomona. It's definitely my top choice right now, mostly because of their programs and student life.
They ask: Explain why the opportunity to study and participate
in clinical experiences in Southern California appeals to you.

I guess I'm just not really sure where to go with this one. I don't have a lot of knowledge about Southern California's clinical opportunities at all. In fact, I've only ever lived in the East or Mid West. I absolutely love Western, but I'm kinda stuck on this question.
Any suggestions or insight?

Ummm well I dont really think its fair to ask people to write your essay. I had to come up with an answer on my own and I definitely was not from Cali.

Do some research, look at their rotation sites on their website. Do they appeal to you? Could you be interested in them because of the nice weather? You must have some interest or knowledge of the rotations or else why would you want to come to Cali? Talk about their location if that appeals to you

go to their website, they have some information on Why SoCal. you can use those if they appeal to you (eg. rotation sites, clinics, hospitals, attractions etc)

You love Western? Well what to do love about it?

Boom. Answer.

Well, they have a second question to ask why western, which I already answered.

To Drctother: I wasn't asking you to write my essay, but your questions were helpful so thank you

not really. that's gonna answer "why western" but not "why SoCal".

OP has no problem with "why western", but is stuck with "why SoCal".

these are 2 different questions in the secondary.

Stop giving the OP hard time and beating around the bush.

The answer you are looking for is "Social Justice." gogogo.

Thanks everyone! I'll have to get my research on- just wasn't really sure where to start. Now I think I have enough to go on

The beezes at the beach!

In all seriousness, you need to look into what kind of things the area can offer you and the specialty that you want to go into. Look into arrowhead. I think that's the name of the hospital associated with Western.

👍

Think about the patient population of the area (diversity, income, language etc.)

I am familiar with So Cal. Do not mention the beach or the mountains as the reason. Mention San Bernardino County/Riverside County/the high desert and the underserved communities that live there and their access issues.

As someone at Western (and im assuming you are too), I dont understand why you would wanna help someone who is lazy. I want classmates who put in the work to do their essays and genuinely want to be there. On top of this, it shows that the OP knows nothing about the school and area, which makes me wonder why they want to go to Western. I may sound like an ass, but its ridiculous to ask others to do your essay. Just my two cents

People ask for help/ideas on their essays ALL THE TIME on SDN. I've learned a lot about Western as a school, including it's programs and student organizations, all of which appeal to me. I needed a bit of prompting for the why Socal question, that was all.

It seems that making assumptions about other people, putting them down, and being quite frankly, rude aren't very good qualities in a future physician. Good luck finding patients that like you.

At least even if you think I'm lazy, I'm still a nice person.

only an SDN thing, and only towards you actually.

Never said you weren't nice

^this - low-income, minority (latino) populations.

To OP: Think. You apparently know of the student organization at Western. Now go back to the service-oriented ones - what would their purpose be in existing if SoCal didn't have the types of populations they aim to help through their mission? Look at their descriptions, google their names and look up any news articles about them (and there are).

A big part of that prompt mentions clinical experiences too. What major clinical centers do Western students rotate at (hint: Arrowhead)? What nearby allopathic medical centers in SoCal provide outstanding clinical experience where you can perform sub-internships and away rotations at (hint: UCLA/USC/LLUMC...)?

Look on previous application threads (2009-2010 is a good one) for input from current Western students. The information is out there, you just have to look for it first. Given that, I don't fault you for asking...after all, this is a forum.

Thanks! I've since written most of it, but it never hurts to keep looking for more information to improve it.
