I am a first year dental student at western. We have a great sim clinic and a new patient care center. Every school is different and those who feel western does not match what they look for in a dental school should not apply there in the first place. It is located in southern california (Great weather, close to LA, etc.) which is a big plus.
But let me be honest with you. Our school has some drawbacks because it is a new school. For example, even the faculty admit that there is not going to be a lot of patient when we go to the clinic. They are trying to get more patients, but it is going take a while (at least 6-10 years) to get a good number of patients. On the other hand, we do start going to the sim clinic in the first year which is a plus.
And it is true that western kicks out students. Four first year students were kicked out in February 2011 (shortly after the first semester ended). Also a few other dental students were kicked out of school and some chose to leave last year. But I think that is the case for most other dental schools as well and not specific to western.
It is true that a lot of politics goes on in our school and let me tell you now that at least 90% of the power is in the hands of the acadmic dean (Monehen). Everything you tell to a faculty or staff will be reported to the academic dean. So try to have a good relationship with her and try not to say bad things about her (at least to the faculty). There are some good and some bad faculty at western. It sucks those that care about students do not have that much power.
The tuition is likely to go up every year which is understandable beacause western is a new school and needs money.
These are the truths about the school. So see if western matches your goals. By the way, we have a great student body which is a big plus!
About the podietry thing, I just want to apologize that the dean of the school sent such e-mails. But remember he is just an INTERIM dean and hopefully we'll get a new dean within the next year or so.
