Hey guys,

So I posted a thread a couple weeks ago whether this study abroad class of mine listed as ZOO 4926 would count towards my BCPM GPA. I had thought since it was classified as Zoology, it would, but after talking to advisers at my school, I'm actually confused and I think our premed advisers don't properly read my e-mails haha. The class is for 6 credits and it's called ZOO 4926 Special Topics in Zoology.

So from the title it clearly says Zoology, but after talking to people at my college, they say this class is not listed as a Biological Science credit, just an elective therefore AMCAS would not count it towards my science GPA. This kind of confuses me because it is a science class, but it won't be counted as one? I'm just curious as to how AMCAS will see my transcript and determine what is BCPM or not.

The course description is at this link at the bottom: http://major.biology.ufl.edu/CLAS_ALS_Courses.html

I would appreciate it majorly if anyone could help me out here because my parents won't pay for me to go on this trip unless it will be counted as a science class towards my BCPM GPA.

Thanks so much let me know if I need to give anymore additional information!

Probably, I mean it sounds like it's a zoology course which will surprisingly cover zoology topics.. So probably it'll count as a BCPM course.

Don't listen to the people at your college. The course prefix is ZOO (zoology is clearly a biological science subfield) and the content of the course is almost certainly more than 50% biological (i.e. science.) The course will count toward your science GPA, and you should list it as a BCPM course on AMCAS.

Hey guys,

Thanks for the replies! So you're saying even though my college (University of Florida) won't count it as a science credit, AMCAS will still count it towards my BCPM GPA? Does AMCAS only see like ZOO 4926 on my transcript or do they go by what type of credit UF assigns it as?

The "type of credit" UF is assigning it is specific to their program and requirements. On AMCAS ZOO 4926 will appear along with the course name, and you will have the option of checking a box saying the course is BCPM or not. AMCAS will then review your courses and either approve or reject courses' designation as BCPM. For courses where the designation is dubious, they will usually take your word for it, but this course doesn't even fall into that category.

Oh wow that makes much more sense than what the advisers here said. I was really confused because Zoology is definitely a science class lol. So the classifcation "B" for Biological Sciences that my college gives it or whatever won't even show up on my transcript, AMCAS goes by the class prefix and description. Thanks so much, I can apply in peace now haha.
