hey guys, i m new to this SDN forum thing.

My question is is it a good idea to take 17 credits of class while spending 10 -12 hours doing research per week?
I m a freshman taking 15 credits this semester and it seems to be ok, but i m not sure if taking more than 17 credits per sem while doing research is too stressful.

Any thoughts are appreciated.

If you can get good grades, go for it. If its going to bring your grades down, dont do it.

Nobody here knows your capabilities. Personally, as a freshman in college, I wouldnt have been able to do it. My mind was on fun at the time.

If you think you can get good grades, then stick with it. Otherwise, it aint worth it.

I'll be taking 17 hrs this fall, and doing about 10-12 hrs of research per week (and that's just the time I will actually be in the lab...I still have to do an hour or so per night of paperwork or research). This is on top of working basically full time at a very busy cardiology and pulmonology clinics (this fall I will work a couple of hours each afternoon, all day Thursday and Saturday) and volunteering a couple of nights a week as a firefighter (granted that doesn't necessarily mean I will actually do anything- just that I might have to go on a call).

I think you if you decide to put 100% effort into anything you attempt, you will succeed at it. Good luck.

thanks for your thoughts guys.

i m just curous about amount of work load because doesnt dentals want to know whether you can handle alot of work in your undergraduate because its going to be stressful when you actually attend their dental school?

it won't be easy, but yes... it will be a nice tune up for dental school.

i, on the other hand, plan on staying as close to 12 hours as i possibly can from here on out 🙂

one more thing i forgot to mention, among those 17 credits are organic chem 1 and genetics (2 lab classes), and with reseach thru out semester.

It still doesnt look that terrible right?? 😵

My junior year i did research (10-15 hours a week) and took:

Biochem I (3 hrs)
Biochem lab (2 hrs)
Physiology w/ lab (4 hours)
French 311 (3 hours)
Intermediate Differential Equations (3 hours)
Intro to Religion (3 hours)

I've had less intense quarters, I've had more intense quarters. Just take the damn classes you want to and do well in them. Adcoms are not going to go over your transcript with a fine toothed comb.

thank all of you for ur thoughts! This SDN forum is great!

I think the scariest semester I ever had was recently, and I only took 13 credits. To be honest, the easiest semester I've ever had was fall of my sophomore year, and I took 18 credits, got straight A's, but was busy as HELL. Didn't get straight A's this past semester, but almost 😉. Bottom line: balance your courseload and don't try to do everything, most schools don't give a rats derriere (not sure if I spelt that right) if you took alot of credits, its the grades that count. You'll find that out after you try and bust your ass to be superman.

I disagree with most of the others. I wouldn't recommend it as a freshman. Give yourself some time to truly get into the college groove. Also, the committees will not look down on 15 hours a semester and you have plenty of time to get in one more class.
