What a medical student should be equiped with...

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Thats the most useless list I've ever seen.

Yea the list is obviously philosophical and the title a metaphor. I wish med students in my school had a few of these and not simply aiming to gain grades and money later on their life...

In case you want a real list of what to be "equipped" with on the wards.

1. Stethoscope (duh)
2. Reliable pen
3. Penlight (residents/attendings always ask for one on rounds)
4. Reflex hammer (again, residents/attendings never carry their own)
5. Some sort of pocket reference (smartphone will suffice)
6. Gum/mints (patients don't like bad breath)
7. Some sort of quick snack (e.g. granola bar). Rounds are PAINFUL if you miss breakfast, right when you need to be showing off that "interest" and "patience".

Just about everything else is never going to be useful except on certain services. If it seems like you are pledging a fraternity, it's because you are.

i've heard residents/attendings have been known to borrow your pen and never give it back

wouldn't shewing gum on the wards be sortof unprofessional?
Sure if you are chomping on it with your mouth open loudly. If you chew gum like a normal human, it isn't a big deal. Just cheek it for patient presentations.

Carry decoy pens to give away. Don't ever give your nice pens to someone else.

i guess what i was asking was more along the lines of "would mints be a better choice than gum?"

I don't think it matters all that much except for maybe tic-tacs or mints that make an annoying rattle. Just offer pieces to your team whenever you eat one and it gets good brownie points and keeps coffee breath at bay.

You need a THICK skin and the ability to bite your tongue with a big smile on your face.

Do people not completely think when coming up with a product. Do they really expect people to put "bawls" in their mouth?

It has been the gamer drink of choice for a LONG time. A bunch of video game tournaments are sponsored by them and everything.
