After spending years in college, getting top grades, and graduating top of my class I have been reduced to working at pizza hut during my gap year. What makes matters worse, I work under a district manager I have known since childhood. I was a honor student, and he was in special ed. How did my life end up like this!

Welcome to being a college graduate in the 21st century.

Should have just gotten an Engineering degree I keep telling myself.

I don't really see anything wrong with this, actually. Are you still pre-med? Why are you working this job?

I don't know why pre-meds feel so entitled sometimes....****. Count your blessings.

if you work hard enough and get the most sales, you can be assistant to the district manager! 😀

could be worse. I am not in a very appealing job myself, but it pays the bills.

I think a lot of students graduate to find that the liberal education they received (in humanities, natural sciences, life sciences, etc.), while deepening their analytical skills and preparing them well for a terminal degree, did not give them many skills that are, by themselves, of much value in the marketplace.

I have bee thinking about this myself lately and have come to the conclusion that the only fields that offer decent career-track, entry-level positions with just a bachelor's degree are engineering, business, and nursing. In any other field I think it can be much more difficult to market yourself with just a bachelor's degree and no/little job experience.

If I could go back, I would have seriously considered an engineering degree vs biology. Our eng students here go full-time for 4 years but make bank (>$20,000) in each of their co-op/intern semesters. That's big money while you're in school. Plus, you're set to find a decent job when you graduate.

Pay your dues and think of it as character building. When everyone else b!tches about how hard studying is in med school or work is in residency you'll be laughing thinking "at least I'm done with grease burns"

engineering degree aint all the good either....back then it was alright

Seriously, business and engineering majors are having it just as bad if not worse. Nursing will always be a safe bet. But most of them hate their job after 10 years and then want to "play" doctor.

What did you really expect? That's the job market right now, the bachelor's degree is the new high school diploma. I work retail and there are people with masters degrees working with me.

And a year from now, you'll be in med school and he'll still be working as a district manager. 🙂

20k a sem? Geez that's ridiculous. Im considering trying to get an internship w/ some pharmaceutical/supp company.

and most ppl applying to nursing programs can't even get in due to (low faculty/high applicants) and on top of that even waiting lists that can last up to years.

Could be worse. You could be an intern.

If you're still considering going to med school and just trying to do something in your gap year, I would actually recommend doing something other than Pizza Hut. It's money, but it's going to stab you in the foot come interview season when they ask how you dedicated yourself to medicine in your gap year.

What did you major in?
Did you take any courses with real-world application?
Do you have any notable work experience?
Did you do any internships or co-ops while in college?
Did you spend your spare time developing any valuable, marketable skills?

Ask yourself these questions before being surprised about your lack of desirable (according to you) employment. I find that many of the typical pre-med activities (shadowing, student clubs... even lab research) don't really double as real-world resume builders.

well he can work somewhere like pizza hut and volunteer more or do something health related. Most hospital jobs require certification

Almost makes you wonder what's more important..getting a job or volunteering at a hospital folding sheets 👍

Actually there isn't a very bright future for engineering, the way outsourcing is going, engineers are set to lose jobs or get stuck with very low paying ones.

what a completely stupid statement in pretty much every way

I don't think it's about being entitled. I remember going through this crap out of college. It's not like you're expecting a job as vice-president at Google. You're just expecting something that could one day become some career or at least be able to pay your own bills. Had you told people 20 years ago that graduating top of your class at a prestigious university would get you a job at Pizza Hut, they would have laughed at you. Anyone that thinks people just go to college for learning is seriously deluded. People (at least partly) go to college because they expect that investment will help them have a career instead of what you could be doing dropping out of middle school and getting a GED.

Well, its completely true. Why would you say its a stupid statement? Are you a nursing student?

a lot of them get laid off

That's why I'm going back to school for engineering if I can't get into medical school, and I don't have a "completely" worthless degree to begin with (math.)

Yeah, it sure sucks how as an engineering major, I didn't get an engineering internship this summer (paying over $25/hour) because it's all getting outsourced.

Oh wait... yes I did! 🤣

Try changing your attitude and you might enjoy it more. This is the last time in your life you will get to have a job like this.. I know a few of my friends who worked their summers in pizza places and loved how different it was from a lab job.. its only one year so chin up and try to enjoy it.. I bet you it smells better than anything you will smell for the next 7 years at work.

oh cool you got an internship.....

Tutor high school kids for 25 $/hr during your gap year, that's what I'll (hopefully) be doing. Otherwise I'll probably end up working at the same crappy retail job I did during high school.

a lot of them get laid off
And people in other professions only requiring a Bachelor's degree never get laid off?

I understand that you need some excuse to justify to yourself why you're scared of engineering's difficulty (and hence, sticking to biological sciences). But there is absolutely no way you can factually argue that people with other Bachelor's degrees have brighter futures than those with engineering degrees.

Mindless engineering and software development is getting outsourced...with disastrous results as the communication barrier is unbreakable and the quality of the work is a joke. Or so I've heard.

Yeah... did you, with your bio degree?

Internships/co-ops are what engineers do when we haven't graduated yet. They lead to full-time jobs (which pay more), which is what I watched all my graduating friends get offered last summer and start this summer.

In your opinion how is Biomed Eng? It's not listed up there because I'm assuming(I hope) that because it is still a relatively new field statistics on it cannot be accurately reported.

Good luck finding an engineering job! Grass is always greener on the other side of course. Sure pay is great with experience and if you have job stability (many do not anymore)

Everyone obviously knows that, but honestly any degree during undergrad is worthless. engineering jobs are competitive and lets see how long someone keeps their job

So why are you not working now instead of trolling SDN?

that poor guy in special ed prolly work his ass off to get the manager gig, you should pay proper respect...
lol
or find anther job...if u have good mcat score why not apply for tutor for kaplan, i heard they pay well...

That's fine but keeping the job is the thing... and also yea get payed more obviously not enough and on top of that you have debt.

People tend to go into BME to do grad school/research, and it's not as geared towards immediate employment after the B.S. (there are exceptions). It's still better than most non-engineering degrees.

Depends on the school I guess. My friends and I do quite well.

engineering jobs are competitive and lets see how long someone keeps their job
Again, can you name a less competitive, less layoff-prone field that only requires a B.S.? Sounds like you're attempting more of your fear-justifying.

I pray thee, please name a Bachelor's degree that pays better than engineering and gives you less debt! (I personally don't have any yet)

I have an internship at an engineering company and I'm working toward my Biology BS! Woo hoooooo!

I'm not really following the convo.. just read this and got excited.

Biology is AWESOME! 😀
