The pre-dental advisor does not understand the applications process for dental school and all that I have learned has come mostly from SDN (thank goodness). He actually told one kid that I know that dental schools don't really care when you apply so not to be in a hurry to get in his application as long as it is in by Nov (this kid took the DAT in july and I just found out has been holding his aadsas application waiting to finish his personal statement! 😱 ) Clueless advisor.
😕 Luckily I found SDN and realized I needed to ignore him half way through the summer. I submitted AADSAS in AUGUST, but they still have not sent it out to schools as of 10/8. So, of course I havn't interviewed anywhere (except I 'visited' creighton). I'm feeling like I'm applying way too late, and am missing the boat.

Anyway, as I look at the list of schools I applied to I realized that there are several that I really don't have a snowballs chance in getting in to (Colorado, San Antonio, etc.)

So, do you guys know if there is any way to ADD more schools to my aadsas application and resend DAT scores?

One more question: If I do add some more schools can you suggest schools that would be more favorable to out-of-staters applying late?

My stats are 3.66 gpa, ~3.3 science gpa, DAT 20AA/22TS/20PAT.
Major: chemistry
Extracurriculars:
50 hours shadowing at 5 offices.
Emergency medical technitian
Nurses assistant in hospital 4 years
4 month internship in public health
chem club
pre-professionals club
lots and lots of volunteer (1,000's of hours)

Research:
genetics project: DNA study of interbreeding toad species
psychology research: public health survey of availability of health insurance
Organic chemistry research: porphyrin synthesis (will present at symposium in dec)

Any suggestions or help would be appreciated...thanks. 🙂

On the "worthless, waste of time web site"....I mean the AADSAS site there is aform to add schools. It is called extra request form or something. For the DAT you have to call the testing service and pay them more money, but they will send it out to who ever you say.

Hey, your stat looks really good! If I am an Adcom, I would select you for at least an interview. I recommend you to apply to Arizona School of Dentistry (if you haven't done so). It is sad that your advisor did not encourage you and your friends to send AADSAS early. If you had, you would have at least a few interviews by now. Good luck to you !

thanks. Anybody else have some suggestions for me? I hate to turn this into one of those "what should I do posts" but I guess I'm asking for some suggestions. 😕

You do have great stats and it is a crime that you have such a clueless advisor. Has anyone ever had a word with this individual and seriously taken him to task on some of the advice he throws around? I hope you are sharing your knowledge with the other students so that they don't fall into some of the traps he has laid. I digress: if you feel that you should or want to apply to some more schools then by all means get in touch with AADSAS asap. After all, what do you have to loose but a chunk of change. It's still not too late for many schools to consider your application. While I was at Penn last week the director of admissions informed us that they interview all the way through March and give equal weight to all applications, regardless of when on the calendar they cross their desks. In short, if you feel the need to apply to a few more schools, determine which ones you like and complete the necessary steps to getting your packet to them. 👍

Sprgrover--
are you saying Penn would be a good place to apply? What did you think about visiting the school?

Does anyone else know which schools would be okay if I applied now to? (Schools that I have a shot of getting accepted to applying late?)

I'm not advocating one school or another in my previous post - just trying to list some examples to make my point that you are not screwed if everything isn't done by December 1st. Though since you mentioned Penn, then here is a little info: Penn is very expensive. However, they also grant around 25 scholarships that halve their tution to students they would like to attend their school and they don't reward all of them to early applicants. I interviewed there this past week and had a very good time. There are some parts of the school that are old, and after coming from interviews at Case and Arizona in which the labs were sparkling, it was an interesting contrast to experience. To say the least there is a lot more that goes into dental school than new sheetrock. Personally, I like Penn's campus and the opportunities it affords as well as the city of Philly (which I like) - but that's me. If you are interested in Penn and what they have to offer, then it wouldn't hurt to apply there. Basically, if you are having some feelings of regret for not applying to some other schools, and don't want to be plagued by the "what if?" monster, then go ahead and apply to those that you are really interested in. 🙂

Here's where I applied:

1. UMKC--as a KS resident I can get in-state tuition
2. Nebraska--some people have said that they favor KS residents
3. Creighton--good
4. Arizona--favor applicants interested in rural health (me)
5. OHSU--good rep, like oregon
6. Iowa--friend going there said it is good
7. Ohio--friend said it was good
8. Case Western--private, good rep

Heres my last two that I feel were a waste:

9. UT-San Antonio--family in area, and have seen school, liked it
10. colorado--have visited school, like colorado, new building (in works)

Hey man, I feel your pain with the advisor. I had the same deal with U of ** when my advisor was like "Oh, I didn't know they wouldn't accept our 1 quarter required of Biochem for their 2 quarter." In fact when the advisor called the University in question the person answering the phone said that I was fine with one, but when I called I was told that NO I needed 2. No one at either school knew what they were doing. Really stressfull when you thought your pre-requisites were finished. I would be turning that advisor in if I were you!

And hey, your stat's look good! Congradulations! As everyone has already said find out what forms you need to add pronto and you should be ok. 👍

I think you have a good list, and with your stats and background in community involvement and breeding toads (just kidding) you stand a very good chance at a lot of those schools.

I submitted AADSAS in August, and I got my pink thing in the mail last week. I added two schools in late September, which is updated on infosource, but didn't reflect on my pink thing. Anybody have an idea if the two schools I added got my app?

Call those two schools and find out - that's your best bet.
