It gets pretty windy during winter time around Westwood. Is it like that do near USC? I think the wind rather than the temperature makes it worse.

dear god i wish i could stay in california. too bad northwestern isn't in LA 😎

Didn't someone say that people from Cali actually still ended up liking Chicago after going to school there? Plus it does seem like a significant % of people match back at Cali for residency.

Ha.... the f'ed up thing with that is I actually thought southern California was cold my first semester out there during August and September coming from Vegas.

I figure as long as you expect it to be cold... it gets a little better.

I actually find LA's winter to be cold too, especially when it rains...but then I'm weak. During X'mas break, I went to Sapporo (Northern Japan), which was snowing at the time, but since I expected it to be cold, it wasn't as bad.

Here's the thing... the winter will be BETTER than what you expect. It sounds to me in this thread that some of you guys are expecting something that completely shuts down the city, and where you won't be able to leave the house. Granted, there are a FEW days every winter that are like that, but in general, you can dress for it. And it's all relative too---right now it is BEAUTIFUL outside---a perfect 10 on the weather scale. And unlike Cali everything here is lush and green with flowers everywhere, rather than that dull Cali brown you guys get for half a year.

You have to take the weather year by year. The one thing about Chicago is you won't get bored with the weather, and IMO this makes life less stale. Like in the winter, there is an atmosphere, IMO, of being really cozy inside--you know, kind of like that feeling of being in a cabin in the woods with a hot cup of cocoa by the fire. I know that sounds corny, but when you are inside in the winter, you won't feel like your missing out on much because everyone else is inside--you just have to put a positive spin on it. Like if you are studying in the library--you'll be happy to be there, rather than thinking "Man I am missing out on all this stuff." It makes learning much more enjoyable.

You can either be depressed because you can't go outside for too long, or you can be happy because you are cozy and warm, and can watch a movie at a friends without feeling like you are missing out on much. And then Spring and Summer and Fall hit and boom, the weather is just near perfect. I had some friends from the South that moved up here, and it's not the cold that will get to you, if anything, since you 1) can dress for it and 2) I honestly believe your body adapts (your blood thickens a bit). Maybe others can attest to this, but when it is 20 degrees out, and let's say it goes up to 30 or 40, you will honestly feel like you won't need a jacket--it will practically feel like 60 degrees. Like anything in life, things really become relative. Like a guy in Florida will be freezing at 50 degrees but here in Chicago you'll see thousands of people jogging outside in sweats--and they are perfectly fine with it. The body does something to adapt so it won't feel as bad after a while. And as far as horror stories of 20 below, I have lived around this area almost my whole life, and there are only a few days like that every year--you can seriously count them on one hand. Kind of like how rare it is to get to 100+ in LA--sure it happens, but it's not near the norm and you can't judge the summers by those days only.

And despite maybe your best hopes, it really doesn't snow that much. I wish it snowed more. It has made be a believer in climate change. When I was a kid we got a LOT more snow than we get now. This year was pretty snowy around February/March but November/December/etc. there might have been, at most, a light covering. I remember 2002 I think we basically got NO snow practically. But it does not snow as much as you think it will, and it certainly doesn't shut down anything since an hour after a snowfall, Chicago's "street team" will have the whole city practically cleared.

yeah thats so true. relative weather adjustment. the first days of the year when the temp hits between 50-60, everyone was out in shorts even chilling out on north beach. but as it starts to get warmer, a couple months later, 50 or 60 meant break out your jacket again.

i remember one time it was nice out, sunny, i was walking down a couple blocks in chicago, dressed in shorts and sandals (yes, it gets that warm) by the time i walked 3 or 4 blocks, the temperature had dropped about 20 degrees, there were a few flakes of snow, and seconds later there was golf ball sized hail for a few minutes. i had to borrow clothes from a friend to get home.

its exciting though. you definitely get to wear all different kinds of clothes. it never really gets unbearably cold and spring and summer are quite nice.

Personally I'm a sucker for winter wardrobes too. I think you can dress and look so much better in winter--you know, nice sweater, jeans, cool jacket, etc. You can look very urban in the winter--it's hard to look urban in the summer. 🙂

I totally feel the same too...since I look really young, it's easier for me to dress to look more mature/sophisticated in winter clothes then summer clothes.

hahaha

i started to write a reply about winter clothes, but then pulled back, thinking i was the only girl on here, and y'all might think i was too silly

i am excited about winter clothes. sweaters and things. and especially, a fabulous new winter coat. i'm thinking of something long and cozy with fur trim. it would be awesome if i could find a long PINK coat with fur trim, but i think that is a long shot. i'm gonna be such a winter diva. just you wait. 😛

i like all clothes though. summer clothes are hot.

I'm actually a guy though 😉

And I know what you're thinking...and the answer is NOPE!

i know you are a guy. i am pretty sure everyone one this thread except me is a guy (ladies, if you're out there, holla). i just thought that being as you all seem to be guys, my excitement over a winter wardrobe would be lost on you. apparently not. 😀

BTW I would recommend something water proof. You can always use an umbrella, but I had one of those gortex North Face jackets when I was living in London (I hate the brand though because it has become "trendy" and "yuppie" or something....) and it worked unbelievably. It was like any weather, no matter how bad, could never phase me with that jacket on.

I wouldn't buy anything 'till you get here though....

I'm hollering   I think many people have assumed I'm a guy on this website. Hehe, i love the anonymity of SDN 😉 Anyways, I looooove winter clothes . . . turtle necks, cozy sweaters, cute (tight 😉 ) jeans. I'll take cold weather any day over hot weather (and I'd much rather spend a vacation skiing and tearing up the slopes than lying on the beach all day)!! DrWuStar, I know there are pink coats around. I've seen people around my campus wearing them. And I'm sure with all the good shops in Chicago that you'll be able to find one 🙂. We should go shopping together!

Can anyone tell me what "pea coats" are, or something like that? One girl from SoCal on my interview panel was all excited about Chicago because she couldn't believe how many people were wearing "pea coats" or something like that. I had no idea what she was talking about--she even brought this up during the interview to the panel when asked about how she liked Chicago.... and I have a feeling the panel didn't know what she was talking about either (I bring this up because Nike mentioned "pink coats" and there is a slight possibility she said "pink" but it sounded like "pea" or "P" or, ahem, "pee coats" to me).

BTW does everyone have a feeling on where they are living?

ctwickman said:

Not sure yet. At first I figured I would just live in the dorms, but living in an apartment is sounding really appealing. 😕

Pea Coat

pea coats are a classic winter piece. i am not really a fan myself. i don't really like double breasted buttons. but many people love them. classic preppy look for cold climates. i'm gonna need something way more on the fabulous side of the spectrum than the preppy side. nike said "pink coats" in reference to my dream coat (pink, long, warm, fur trimmed).

Nike!!!!!!!!!! glad to hear i'm not the only girl 😀

i don't know yet where i will live. off campus for sure. likely wrigleyville or near there.

u don't want to live in the dorms...not worth it. u will be kicking yourself after the first month...or u will get a marriage license like me. 🙂

I'm a girl too!!!! So three girls so far -- Nike, DrWuStar, and kweenkong. And Question to UCLAMAN, how come I don't want to live in the dorms? Why is it bad? Does anybody know how we sign up for the dorms? (I just got off the wiatlist so I don't know if i'm late doing everything).

Another question for UCLAMAN, I'm assuming from ur name that you went to UCLA undergrad...how was the transition? I'm wondering because I"ll be coming from UCLA too.

So who all is going to be here this summer? For the people here, I think that we should start going out over summer and get to know eachother before the school year starts! I will be living in Lake Shore, so I will be right in downtown. Anyone else?

Lake Shore Plaza? I might be visiting in Chicago later this summer. I would definitely love to hang out!

i will be there in early august.

Cool. If anyone else is visiting Chicago, you are welcome to crash at my place, or my friends (if you would like to stay with a girl).

well the dorms are under construction so be prepared for a lot of dust. if u have allergies i don't suggest the dorms. people have found bed bugs. the rooms are tiny(150sq ft maybe?). there is no kitchen u must purchase a meal plan. and u are paying the same price as a convertible just on the other side of campus. i am paying the same price and i have my own place, a lake view, a kitchen and 650 sq feet. u are definitely not getting the most for your money at the dorms. u do have more opportunity to meet other people as u see them all the time. but i think u shouldnt have a problem as long as u are willing to go to the first year events and stuff. so as long as u arent a hermit u will make friends even if u live off campus. but if u really want to be in the dorms u should get dorm info sometime in the middle of summer if i remember correctly.

the transition wasnt bad. the area is very reminiscent of the beverly hills area. porsches, lambos and ferraris rolling around. navy pier reminds me of santa monica pier. the biggest adjustment will be the weather and having to rely on public transportation.

OMG, I always thought Nike is a guy...

And the NW Dorms just remind me of the old, small resident halls at UCLA...not worth the money...plus the food at the cafeteria was pretty bad.

I am definitely not a guy. I grew up outside of Chicago, lived in Boston for 5 years and then in Arizona after graduating- for the last seven years. Bring on the winter wardrobe!

Movin' on up August 1 or so. I would definitely be up to exploring Chicago before we all buckle down and start studying. After the craziness of moving in, we'll have a week or two of free time to check out everything. I wanted to move up in July, but my parents would have none of that - they want to go on family vacations (oh, the horror ...) and spend some 'quality time' with me. I'll be frantically clawing my way to Chicago after that.

Aaaaaanyways.

Finally got caught up on the thread 🙂 Got sorta wrapped up in work and playing too much Ragnarok Online 😛 The cold won't bother me as much - you can always put on more layers, but there's only so much you can take off 🙂 And I can totally understand the whole 'cozy indoor' thing.

Allergies? Dust? Bed Bugs!?! Since I am pretty much allergic to anything small enough to inhale, the dorms are even less appealing now 🙂 My parents are now considering -investing- in a studio somewhere around the campus, so I don't have much say in where I'm going to be living...

Winter clothes? I have to go shopping... Durham really spoils you, and I suppose my usual T-shirt and shorts deal won't keep me from freezy pain and doom come winter 😉

Gah... why is it still only May!?!

my apologies.

have u signed lease at lake shore plaza already? what floor will u be on? facing which part of the city? ...and did u find someone to use as a reference?

Welp, Millenium Park is pretty much done....

hey calbee...couldnt find u on AIM this morning...

the new class' names are up on the northwestern directory...maybe you can use it as an early warning system to find out if you got in. just go to www.northwestern.edu and then go to the online directory and search for yourself. hehe...uh oh...maybe now you will perform a northwestern directory search on yourself everyday.

as for the others on this thread...go to the northwestern online diredctory and search for yourself...you'll find your new email address with an md in it. i'm lame and got real excited last year when i got an email addy with an md in it. once school starts you will be able to change your address so dont worry if you dont necessarily like your "[email protected]" format. i decided to change mine last year since i wasnt a fan of having a 007 after my name...i ain't trying to be no physician with a license to kill yo.

...and if you are still wavering between two schools...come on...you are already in the directory and you have an md in your email addy...you cant turn back now!

...and if you arent in the directory...hmm...maybe your acceptance isnt real. 😉 😀

alrighty...off to lab...I LOVE counting cells!!!! 🙄

I turned down NU today, CalBeE I hope it goes to you now!!!

Good for you OldLady. It sounds like your home and life is in Arizona so I have always rooted for people to go where they will be happy, not necessarily with a so-called ranking or where *I* think they should go. I turned down higher "ranked" schools than NU simply because I liked NU the best, I want to spend the next 4+ years around Chicago, and with all the new construction, NU looks like it has a very very bright future. It makes me sad to see some people just go with the latest US News report to determine where they are going to spend the next 4+ years of their life, especially when in 4 years these so-called rankings could be totally different, etc.

I hear ya. I think I would have been happy in Chi-town but my husband would not have been, so that would not have been any good. I am old and we are settled so even though during interviews I thought it would be no problem to leave, once we sat down and looked at it, it was daunting. I got into all the Chicago schools I interviewed at, so I am hoping 4th year away rotations or residency back in the windy city is possible if that is still my goal in the future. The majority of my family is in IL so I imagine it will be my goal and my husband will support the move then. I think NU is the bomb, otherwise I would not have kept myself on the waitlist after getting a dean's scholarship from U Chicago. You guys have the best of everything there, it was my fave school hands down. And I looked at "higher ranked" schools too. I went to a highly ranked engineering school and there were lots of miserable people. People need to go where they fit best, period.

Best wishes to everyone this summer/fall!

agreed. that is the worst way to make a decision i can think of. "well... i don't really know anything about anything, but i'm really glad i got into school XX because it's ranked #21, and school YY was only ranked #22. school XX rules and so do i!!"

^

The "rankings" in US News change, too. I remember Yale was like #3 just 10 years ago and now it is not even in the top 10. Northwestern also was like #25 a few years ago and now it is #20, and I imagine with all the new construction and efforts put in by the school to get more primary researchers it could be #15 by the time we graduate. But not that that intrinsically means anything... which is the point! 🙂

After thinking about what the dean at Stanford said about US News's rankings (i.e., "they are meaningless because they don't measure the quality of your education"), I tend to really agree with him. What the US News has is a bunch of numbers that they crunch--but as you go through medical school, what will really measure how the school "ranks" with you is how well you fit there, what kind of clinical experience you can get, how much personal attention the school gives you (i.e., how important you are to the school), how happy you are to be restless and put in 100% of your effort to learn, etc. A bunch of numbers won't tell you any of that.

is illinois a republican, democrat, or swing state? i need to figure out where i want to vote this fall. thx.

Illinois is definitely a democratic state, thanks to the Chicago political machine. Woo hoo! GO DEMS!

I agree wholeheartedly with what you've all been saying about the BS that surrounds rankings. My parents were trying to get me to read up on those ranking sites and such, and I couldn't get them to understand that ranking isn't what it's all about. I fell in love with this campus as a high school kid for some ineffable reason (I participated in the NUIN Brain Bee for 3 years after it began my sophomore year in HS) and did my best to get a job with the medical school/hospital as a college student; as we speak, I'm in the NMH Dept. of Neurological Surgery office over on Erie. I LOVE THIS PLACE!

Would anyone mind telling me about their number and such that got them in here? Feel free to PM for the sake of modesty. Thanks!

well then, it doesn't even matter where i vote. cali is solidly dem too. i think that post above is the first time i ever spelled illinois. feels weird. "i live in illinois". yikes.

yes, NU rocks. i'm really psyched to be going there. good luck to you applying. are you applying this year? i will send you a PM with my stats.

Hmm...

Are the dorms going to be remodeled this year? I heard from my parents (which is often, but not always, accurate) about some notice sent to current students about having to find temporary housing out of the dorms this year. Just wanted to check in to see if that's true.

Thanks!

the lake shore center building is really really old. throughout last year it had been undergoing a lot of tuckpointing outside. as far as i know there isn't a complete remodeling going on that would prevent people from living there though. if there is, my class didnt get any notices regarding such actions. and just the other day i ran into a PhD candidate on my way to the gym at LSC who was planning to live there in the fall so i doubt students will have to find "temporary housing." if that is the case though might as well find an apartment in the area.

even if students arent forced to find temporary housing...lake shore center is sooo not worth living in. i strongly advise incoming m1's to just look for an apartment. when you all get your housing information realize that the dorms are a real ripoff. $832 a month for 100 square feet(maybe less) is really not worth it.

Hey guys,

I got in last Thursday morning, and I've been struggling to decide where I want to go. As of tonight I am thinking Northwestern, but I have yet to inquire about financial aid (especially since I would be applying for it this late).

Has everyone found a place to live? I've heard that the dorms are overpriced, and it seemed that way on interview day, so I'll probably look for an apartment during the next couple months. Is there a forum or website where incoming students can look for roommates, etc.?

Thanks, and I hope to see some of you soon!
