I will be beginning an MSTP this summer (early lab rotation) out west, and will be receiving a fairly decent stipend. However, I am at a loss for how to pay for relocation costs and a car. An educational loan wouldn't help since they pay up to full tuition cost (for me $0) and the school usually has to approve them (I doubt they would in this case). A personal loan usually has to be paid within five years, and I certainly will not have extra stipend money left over to pay such a loan while in school. Is there any clever way to finance additional personal costs not covered by an MSTP stipend? Are there any lenders that lend directly to the student regardless of the tuition cost?

Have you talked to the program about this? I had similar difficulties, but was able to work through them because I'm from this area. I don't know how I would have been able to cough up the money to relocate further. Still, this can't be an uncommon scenario, so I wouldn't be embarrased to call the school and ask for assistance.

Let us know what they say and good luck!
