Same question was asked before but was not really answered. So I am asking again:

In other words, Does a surgery prelim year fulfill the requirements for an advanced position in anesthesiology or Radiology?

Below are the requirements for anesthesiology advanced position:

• 12 months of education must provide education in fundamental clinical skills of medicine relevant to anesthesiology
o Does not need to be in first year, but must be completed before starting final year
o Must include six months of fundamental clinical skills education caring for inpatients in family medicine, internal medicine, neurology, obstetrics and gynecology, pediatrics, surgery or any surgical specialties, or any combination
• During the first year, there must be at least one month (not more than two) of critical care medicine
• During the first year, there must be at least one month (not more than two) of emergency medicine

I know for a fact it does in Anesthesiology and likely Radiology as well. That being said “A” positions are drying up in Anesthesiology due to most programs converting them to “C” or “R” slots.

Mostly yes for anesthesia. As you can see, you need 1 month of both ICU and ED. There's no requirement that a prelim GS program give you either. But some / many might.

Although it might seem like it is *required* to have a month in the ED during intern year in order to go into anesthesia, it is really not. It is preferred, to get it done as an intern, but can be done later.

Similarly, it is preferred for anesthesia interns to do two months of ICU, but if you only get one, you can make up the other later in training.

I'm a CA-2 this year, with an ED rotation coming up soon because I did not have one as a surgical prelim. CA-2 is the year that my program schedules ED rotations for anyone that does not have one already.

Any surgery prelim will work for radiation oncology regardless of curriculum.
