So here is the deal. I am a non-us img graduated in 2018 from Middle eastern university. My step 1 is 236, step 2 245 and I am currently doing research at a Major Research Institute in Boston. So far I have received polar opposite II from either community programs or places like UChicago, Baylor, NYU and Tufts. I looked back through the previous years and people with similar stats as mine ended up on mid-low tier programs. Do I really have a shot on those places? Could this be only courtesy interview to the attending I work with?

As an img you often get interviews from mid tier places based on scores. Since you have good but not amazing scores, you could receive interviews from these when second wave rolls around. It’s funny, because it’s almost as if they go by scores. I’m one of three IMGs applying from my med school, I have 250/260, while one of my colleagues has better score and the other has lower scores. The colleague better than me got interviews from those places 2-3 days before me, and the other one got it 1 week later. This has happened multiple times, leading me to think they go down the list of scores.

Even if that’s not the case, places like Tufts are IMG friendly. You have a great shot matching there.

Thanks for your response. You received interview from Chicago, NYU and Baylor too?

No. My profile isn’t great tbh other than being a fresh graduate with good scores. With my profile I get a large number of mid tier university programs, especially those that follow scores, but not great programs like Baylor or Chicago.

Also, if you’re being interviewed somewhere, it’s because they like you and you definitely have a chance of matching there. Having a great mentor also helps a lot.
